That's an interesting question... one thats very hard to answer. I value competitiveness, activity and good owner retention. The one thing I've seen kill leagues fastest is getting a bunch of replacement GMs in the same season, who all try to rebuild and often don't have much experience with the game.
I'm part of a league I consider to be nearly perfect. It's 7 seasons old (in OOTP form), turnover is on average 1 owner a season out of 24 teams, but seems likely to go down from that. The forum has averaged about 20 posts a day over the last 2 years, and a lot of the owners have known each other from the FPS incarnation of the league, so people are pretty chatty and friendly with each other. Outside of a couple less skilled GMs, competition is pretty tight, and with a moderate salary cap of $80 million, most playoff teams are kept out of the free agent bidding (unless they lose major players themselves). The commish almost always has sims up within an hour or two of when lineups are due, and is very responsive to questions and concerns from owners. Maybe winning my division 5 times in a row is helping me like the league, but I think the owner retention speaks for the league. Of course, we have no openings and a few people on the waiting list, but the webpage is http://www.thenewwwbl.com/ Good luck and I'd say look for those things in finding a great league. |

To the original poster, look for a league that seems to have a reliable commissioner and some dedicated owners. Among other things, activity in waivers, contract extension, and trade forums are an indication that owners are invested in their teams.

Not exactly sure what type of league you're looking for:
Historical, Fictional, Current Roster Fast Sim, Slow Sim OOTP5, OOTP6 Newly created, firmly established etc What type of team are you looknig for DH, no DH Certain city or team Rebuilding project, dynasty etc To really give you an idea of what league would best suit you, we'd need to know more about your preferences, and then people could let you know if their league matches what you're after... Please feel free to take a look at FORT (thread here: 1957 Historical League has 2 openings (Yankees and Royals) ) and see if this is the type of league you think you'd be interested in... |

Do a little homework and you'll find the right league(s) for you. You should figure out what you'd like in a league - fictional or historical? modern day or an era that appeals to you? Fast paced with lots of games covered in each sim period or a slow paced league where you can really savor each game played?

If you're into fictional leagues, I'd check out the KBL in my sig. We've got a couple of open teams and a top-notch commish who puts in an amazing amount of work on the league.

You're likely to get about 100 different replies to what the 'best' league is, some biased and some not. There is an abundance of great leagues in the ootp community, there are also some not so good ones, but if you take some time and scout out the posts made in this section you should find something to suit your needs. LivnLegend also makes an excellnt point that the best leagues don't have openings much, but be patient, play the game and eventually you will find what you seek.
