Just an observation...

With Major League Baseball in the off-season, maybe this should be expected but I have noticed very few new leagues worth looking into. I’ve been monitoring, waiting to see if anyone is planning on starting a league that uses much imagination past the sboring & tandard cookie-cutter real players & real teams league with a “fantasy draft"...it’s been awhile since I’ve seen one.

Perhaps since OOTP6 has been out for awhile, everyone has now “settled in” to their online league routine and without the newness of the product, people are not as eager to expand their current online experiences.

It’s probably just as well that new leagues haven’t been popping up since it seems a number of well-established leagues have advertised openings and some have been slow to fill them.

In the past, leagues with creativity and originality seemed to do well but then I joined two of the more recent leagues of that note and both closed rather rapidly so who can really tell?

It seems like the Spring, with the dawning of the new MLB season, may be the best time to launch new leagues.

Agree 100%. When real baseball starts, real baseball fans are very much "out and about". When the real season ends, things tend to quiet down a bit. A lot of people are deep into football right now, especially with the play-off races starting to heat up as we move into the final few weeks of the season.

Myself, I've been looking for a 2nd league to join for a while now, just haven't found what I'm looking for. Of course I'm quite picky when it comes to a league meeting my needs, so it usually takes me a while to find the right league.

I've noticed that as well - although I've been sitting on a new league idea for a month or so now. Thing is.. I don't see much of a point to opening up a league now, with v7 being a year a way and.. possibly finding myself unable to import from v6.

The thing, too.. is most innovative ideas entail a lot of work. While I'm more than willing to put in the work.. I'm also more than willing to sit on my duff and wait to see if OOTP7 will be able to do some of it for me. =)

Yep, good point about waiting for v7

I too have a league I wanted to start but I never realy considered the v7 aspect. It had more to do with having time to run it along with the USBA.

Honestly, the waiting for V7 thing seems likes procrastination to me. I wouldn't worry about. For one thing, they are SAYING you'll be able to import. I'd be more worried if it was a “maybe” or “no comment.” If it's possible to import an OOTP6 league into Puresim then I would think it'd be possible to import into OOTP7. Also, there's no rule which says you have to convert.

As far as OOTP7 saving you work, I wouldn't bank on it. Obviously, I do not know the specifics but, at least IMO, the Roster Mangement rules in OOTP6 don't really work as they should yet and even if they do (i'll admit I haven't really messed around with them much after the last round of patches) it took them a long time to get it right.

Anyways, best of luck with your league....whenever it comes.

I'll co-commish the new league with you!

BTW - I agree with your first post as well. I have been keeping my eye open, but I have seen nothing new that interests me.

This league has a ton of creativity, a great commish, is ootp5 and is still in it's infancy. 2 openings. You can IM Bob at CatchEW20.

Piggybacking a new league ("in its infancy") advertisement onto a thread postulating that the spring is the best time to start new leagues. Someone hasn't been reading their Oglivie on Advertising lately.

That league was the only league I even thought about joining, but decided it still wasn't my style as I like 100% fictional (creating your own logo/city, etc.). I haven't been in a league since I had to stop the UBF, and I'm dying to get in one so if anyone has any outstanding leagues on the horizon please feel free to share

As for v7.. I'm the "don't believe it 'til you see it" type. Markus also implied he'll be keeping dollar figures, but then Marc Duffy said he wasn't sure. Markus is great, don't get me wrong.. but sometimes he thinks with his heart too much. It's actually a great thing, and one of the reasons I got OOTP in the first place.

I think v7 would save some work, though. If there are "alternate options" for how to begin your league (i.e. Free Agency, instead of a draft.. and especially instead of predetermined contracts). The addition of extra leagues you can run simultaneously also helps out quite a bit. Last, but certainly not least, is the fluctuating "error rating" - which I was very glad to see, since my little concept included it. A real expansion engine would really help, too... although that wouldn't be a big deal for the online leagues, just something that would make my solo leagues a heck of a lot easier.

LOL, I would, but like I said I'd prefer a complete fictional league.

I personally haven't even touched OOTP5 or 6 since the MLB season came to an end. But that happens to me every year. I tend to play only basketball sims during the MLB offseason under the influence of the NBA and NCAA and then get back to OOTP when the basketball seasons are over and when spring training starts. Everything actually comes together pretty nicely like that.

I have nothing useful to contribute, but so many of my favorite people are in this thread, I thought it would be nice to drop by and say hello.

Just an observation

I had hoped to start a league in November, but lots of other stuff got in the way and I decided to postpone that. Hopefully after the holidays I'll be able to get it going. I'm sort of in the same boat as LL... Real player, real team leagues bore me now. I get tired of "I'll take the Pirates if they're still available" every time I look into a league.

As for originality, I tried to come up with some different stuff for my league, but frankly, I guess I'm just not that creative. Instead, I went with fictional with 100+ years of simmed history instead. Personally, I find that interesting enough, and hopefully I can come up with something unique.

btw, you can check it out at www.tubf.net

This and other similar comments in the thread got me to wondering what people are looking for in a new league. Not that I'm planning on starting one, but I am interested in what makes leagues attractive to discerning potential owners -- new leagues in particular. I've got a pretty good idea what makes established leagues attractive.

  • 100% Fictional (Fictional teams, players, premise)
  • Minimal Financials (none of that complicated junk)
  • Create Your Own Team Logo
  • No PHP-Nuke web design
  • Commissioner who's been on the board for more than 10 days and who knows how to spell
  • 12-18 teams (20+ is just asking for unactive owners)

Dola,

Just poking fun, but I love how you have two Michigan teams and only one New York
