World Penal League Baseball (New league)

I'm looking to start up a new fictional league called the World Penal League.

Setup:
It's the year 2153. The United Nations' push to clean up the world population has gone overboard over the past 100 years, and now it is estimated that anywhere from two-thirds to three-quarters of the world population has been placed in some sort of prison, including just about every professional athlete in existance. However, the high council of the UN has noticed that over the past 20 years, as the number of athletes on the "outside" has diminished, the number of people being placed in prisons has doubled.

Therefore, resolution 2151-01a was unanimously passed to institute the first organized baseball league in the 22nd century, consisting of 24 teams comprised of prisoners from 24 of the largest prisons in existance all across the world. The league will be broken down into 4 6-team divisions arranged by geographic location. The prisons selected are (state, country included):

American League:
Northern Division:
  • Attica (New York, USA)*
  • Eastern State (Pennsylvania, USA)*
  • Kingston (Ontario, Canada)*
  • McNeil Island (Washington State, USA)
  • Oz (Kansas, USA)*
  • Riker's Island (New York, USA)*

Southern Division:
  • Alcatraz (California, USA)
  • Devil's Island (French Guiana)*
  • Guantanamo Bay (Camp Delta, Cuba)
  • San Quinten (California, USA)*
  • Urso Branco (Porto Velho, Brazil)
  • Wackenhut (Texas, USA)*

National Division:
Western Division:
  • Al-Wathba (Abu Dhabi, UAE)
  • Kanater (Egypt)
  • Petit Verger (Mauritius)
  • Robben Island (South Africa)
  • Umuahia (Nigeria)*
  • Wandsworth (United Kingdom)

Eastern Division:
  • Bang Kwang (Thailand)
  • Changi (Singapore)
  • Fremantle (Australia)*
  • Kompong Thom (Cambodia)
  • Lubyonka (Russia)
  • Shebarghan (Afghanistan)

Some of the rules adopted by the WPL:
  • Teams will play a 162-game schedule with no interleague games. The top two teams from each division advancing onto the WPL Playoffs.
  • BOTH leagues will be playing with the DH rule (It was determined that in order to garnish rapid fan involvement, they would want to see more offense instead of pitchers hitting)

More rules will be posted as we get close to starting the league.

The league is being run on the latest version of OOTP5. I am not requiring GM's to have OOTP5 to participate in the league, but it is strongly recommended. Teams with a * next to them are currently taken. The others remain open.

The current page for the league is http://wpl.cnoteswebdesign.com

If you have any other questions about the league, please feel free to e-mail me at wplcommish@gmail.com

Thanks, and I look forward to seeing you in the WPL!

I have known Chris for a little while now and can tell you all that he is a great commissioner. In fact, I have already grabbed Eastern. Chris is someone who takes his responsibilities very seriously (as serious as he gets anyways) You all should definitely take a gander around the site and choose a team. With a league of inmates, it should make for some very interesting forum discussions. Anywas, hurry up and grab a team before they are all gone

I've updated the site to get a decent, non-OOTP generated homepage up. Not many of the pages are there still, but I'm working on it.

Still looking to get a few of the teams filled, so if you find the league interesting, please feel free to e-mail me at wplcommish@gmail.com

The address again: http://wpl.cnoteswebdesign.com

Thanks.

For the National Division, you should of added Abu Ghraib.

Good luck...I'm already in/on waiting list for enough leagues, though.

Thanks. When I came up with the idea for the league, I had a list of about 35 prisons, and that was one of them. But when it actually came time to create the league, I cropped it down to 24, and that was one of them that was cut. If I ever expand, though, it's one of the first to be added.

Yeah, there are a few prisons in the league that are closed (Fremantle, Eastern State, Alcatraz), but when I was doing the league, everything I read points to them being some of the larger prisons and for purposes of the league, I wanted to be using large-scale, high-security prisons (instead of small rinky-dink prisons such as the Montgomery (NY) County Correctional Facility... haven't ever heard of it? Because it only houses about 50 convicts in a small town in the middle of upstate new york. Not necessarily a prison the United Nations would consider using for the league).

Plus, it's 2153. They've had 150 years to fix them up and rebuild them, and if two-thirds to three-quarters of the world's population is currently in prison, then they'll definitely be needed.

We're starting to build speed as we're up to 6 teams with GM's now. Still looking for more. Although we're running on OOTP5, it's not required that you have it (although, as most of you probably know, it helps a great deal).

So if you or someone you know is interested, please contact me:

Oz? If you want a prison from Kansas, try Leavenworth.

Good imagination in the set-up!

However, I was checking out the player list and I was disappointed to see a lack of creativity given to the player names and nicknames...you need guys that sound like criminals! You know, things along the lines of Garland 'The Marietta Mangler' Greene, Diamond Dog Jones, and Billy Bedlam!

I am going to let players create their players nicknames in my league. You may want to the same.

I had Leavenworth, but somebody wanted to rename a team to "Oz" and that was the team they chose.

If we ever expand, I may re-introduce Leavenworth. Thanks, though.

Plus, doesn't a team named Oz seem like a natural fit for Kansas? hehe.

Both are great ideas and during the initial setup of the league, I am going to allow GM's to change the names of some of their players and, if they so choose, at least give a nickname to all of their players. Besides, trying to come up with "tough sounding names" for 24 teams on my own would have been a daunting task considering I created the league a couple days ago. But that option is available to all teams.

So, you joining?
