That would be cool. Something that would happen if the starter is out REAL early, i.e. injury, or not pitching well for whatever reason.

Isn't this what mop-up reliever is for?

To me, and I think the game does it this way too, mop-up relievers are the guys who you can't depend on that much so you put them in to "mop up" when you are losing by a bunch or sometimes when you are winning by a bunch. Notice when you auto-arrange your pitching staff the crappy guy end up as mop-ups

Yeah, but I think that someone good should go into the position for long relief. Look at last night's game Yankees vs Angels. Colon had to come out, and Santana came in. I think we mean someone like a starter, rather then the crappy mop-up guy. Does this make sense? I think the mop-up guy should stay the same.

I guess it could always be coded that once hte first pitch of the game is thrown that "spot starter" could become Long Reliever

I'd like to have more detailed bullpen options which include the inning and game situation.

Something like:

Code:
Inning Close	Blowout

5th or earlier
6th
7th
8th
9th
I'd also like to see a flag for relievers that says they can only face lefties or righties.

Fantastic! That's even better! I'll also add

Code:
Inning Close Blowout

5th or earlier 1st choice: 1st choice:
                    2nd choice: 2nd choice:

6th 1st choice: 1st choice:
                    1st choice: 2nd choice:

7th etc... etc..

8th etc... etc..

9th etc... etc..
Battists also came up with another fantastic idea:

Quote:
Trust - the higher the trust you have in a pitcher, the more likely the AI would be to put them in
Favor Rested Pitchers - the higher this value is, the less likely the AI would be to put in a pitcher who threw 35 pitches yesterday
Respect Pitching Roles - The higher this is, the more likely it would be that the AI would pitch your closer as your closer, instead of putting in your middle relief pitcher to get the save. Similarly, setup men would be used as setup men.

Combined with settings for "pitch count," "favor lefty/righty matchups," and "hook", that would make it pretty flexible.

Some other possibilities:

"never pitch this player for more than X innings" - for cases like you see in MLB all the time - the setup guy who NEVER pitches more than one inning

"favor between innings changes" - stop the AI from changing relief pitches after 1 out, unless absolutely necessary
