fictional auto-league expansion
Let's say I had the current 30 team setup.
It would be nice to be able to expand to 4 8-team divisions, and have the computer automatically have all the old teams leave a certain number of players unprotected for the expansion draft, and have the new teams draft from this list (rather than having to do it all manually). |

Part of the baseball experience is the whole expansion process. It's a cool test of your GM abilities to completely build a team from scratch, rather than doing what you can with what someone else has built. Even if you want to be Tampa Bay in 98 (to see if you could do a better job -- and really, who couldn't), you still need to work from what the roster was at the beginning of that season.
An optional Expansion Draft feature between each season would be awesome. First thing when the season ends, you get a "Hold Expansion Draft?" choice. If you say yes, it could prompt all human controlled teams to submit their protect lists, and automatically do it for the computer teams. Then you get sent to the draft screen, hold the coin flip, and draft. It wouldn't be any more complicated than the amateur draft. After it's over, you'd then proceed to the other usual between season activities. There should also be economic impacts of expansion built in. If the league over-expands, attendance numbers fall a bit league-wide, that sort of thing. We could also have the possibility of (*shudder*) contraction... and then have a player dispersal draft that works in a similar way. |

Excellent ideas that from a programming standpoint wouldn't be horribly hard to introduce.
I'd like to see a more flexible league option where you could have 2 or 3 leagues with anwhere from 1 to 4 or 5 divisions. How great would it be to have the ability to open an expansion team? The computer could generate the league and a few years of stats for your reference, then select who each team will leave unprotected for an expansion draft and you go in there and select them. Or in the off-season if there is contraction, you could have a lottery draft to pick players from the contracted teams. I'd also like to see geography come into play in OOTP. Right now the cities involved might as well be coordinates in outer space with an arbitrary distance between them all. Geography is what makes some rivalries so great, and adding too many teams to a metropolitan area could make the other teams there lose revenue.
