In game (mis)management
I'm 35 years into a career sim on OOTP4. I don't play out many games at all - I prefer to focus on the GM stuff, and just sim the games. Occassionally, however, I'll peek at the box scores and game logs, especially in the playoffs.
I think I'd be better off just not knowing what goes on in these games. I've found that roughly half of the games I look at reveal a significant flaw in the decision making by the managers. Often the types of things where you just say "what the heck were they thinking?" The intentional walk abuse is one great example. Another is mis-use of bullpen pitchers. Early substitutions, for no apparent reason, are always baffling. Here's my latest favorite... the 1 out sac bunt (no not by the pitcher, by one of the best hitters in the lineup). And wait til you see when they decided to use this brilliant strategy... http://www.400softwarestudios.com/bo...2259#post72259 Suggestion: Take a serious look at some of the things that transpire in these games - many have been raised in these forums. The brand of baseball that's being played here is often bush league. |

I think that you would be remiss if you didn't also say that overall, this is the best baseball sim you have ever played , as I am sure that this is the case.
Anyways, I have noticed these things as well. I find that if I just sim through the year, the AI doesn't utilize all members of the bullpen as well as I could. I find the 1 out bunt attempt and the mystery substitutions to be particularly annoying. Also, it seems as though whenever I play a good team, their good players like Reggie Jackson or Joe Morgan are just sitting on the bench. And they are not tired. I think that this has to do with the way the computer auto assigns the depth chart. This area needs a little improvement. |

As a stat generating simulation, its outstanding. And there's no question that the game is engaging (heck, I'm 35 years into a career and still goin'). But I also expect a text-based game to excel over the graphic heavy offerings by 1) providing a better thinking man's game on the field, and 2) offering a better challenge as an opponent. OOTP, in my opinion, still needs a lot of work in these areas

I agree that the AI still needs some work. These have been noted. I have (several months ago) in the Beta forum asked for some tools to hopefully be able to diagnose better exactly what strategies the AI is employing when, etc. This would help to test and beef up the AI through suggestions. (Obviously not all of the AI weaknesses are obvious)
In any event Markus has mentioned the AI is going to be worked on (both in the patches and in future versions) so hopefully everything will continue to improve. |
