A couple new Pitcher ratings
The first one is basic: Control
The K and BB ratings combined give an idea of a pitchers control, but some rating spelling it out would be nice. This one is something I could really get into: Efficiency I've been pissed off with the pitch counts I get with some pitchers and perhaps an efficiency rating would be a good twist. A starter with a D endurance may have a good efficiency rating and still be able to make it through 7 IP regularly. |

As for the control issue, I both agree and disagree. Control is a pretty vital part of What Makes a Pitcher. You can have a pitcher with good control who walks a lot of people (like Mike Hampton before he sucked), and you can have a pitcher with good control who doesn't (Greg Maddux). You can even have control pitchers who get lots of strikeouts.
But then, if you can have all of those categories, why do you need the rating in the first place? Am I making sense, or is it just too late for me to think correctly? As for effiency, it has been proven quite a few times that the number of pitches thrown has little to do with the overall success of a pitcher, Baseball Prospectus often has very good articles relating to this, so I'm not so sure it would be a good measure . . . It's also related to the kind of team you're facing or if you are a strikeout pitcher. By nature, a strikeout pitcher has to throw at least 3 pitches per batter, or if you are not a strikeout pitcher and are facing a team like the Brewers, you will have a higher pitch count no matter what. These are great topics to discuss, though.

The control rating isn't too big of an issue. Like I said, the other ratings basically give an outline of a control rating.
But in reference to the efficiency rating...I'm not saying that someone with a good efficiency will be any better than people with a worse rating, but it would give a pitcher with a lower endurance the chance to stay in a little longer and thus get the run support needed for a win. As it is, a C start can throw what, about 80 pitches a game? That may only bring them to the 5th inning and their team may not have scored enough runs by that time to get a victory. That's the basis of me bringing up an efficiency rating. |

Nope... Here are the endurance ratings:
Starters one day/in a five day span : A - about 130/240 pitches B - about 120/220 pitches C - about 110/200 pitches D - about 100/180 pitches E - about 90/160 pitches Relievers one day/in a five game span : A - about 75/110 pitches B - about 60/90 pitches C - about 50/80 pitches D - about 40/70 pitches E - about 35/60 pitches Note these values are at maximum and are also effected by the ERA settings, specifically the Pitcher Endurance era setting. (The default for modern era is Fair, hence the reason pitchers seem to tire a little before these ratings currently (about 10 pitches before based on my observation). The Use Relievers setting will have some impact as well. |
