Interdependent Player Ratings
I don't frequent this area, so maybe something like this has been brought up, but I think it would be neat to change the rating categories for hitters from "Contact, Gap, Power, ect." to something like this:
Contact - Effects LD% and subsequently BABIP, also all-around power. Pitch Recognition - Lowers K's and therefore increases # of BIP and walks. Bat Speed - Effects all-around power, slight effect on K's. Strength - Home run power. Bunt - Bunting success %. Approach - Slider: [swing for the fences] to [neutral] to [put ball in play]. Speed - Effects bunt for hit %, SB success rate, taking the extra base, and defensive range. Running Instincts - Effects # of times thrown out on the basepaths, including SB success rate. Fielding Insticts (Or "Fielding Knowledge") - This could be by position, and effect defensive range, kills, and holds. Glove - Effects fielding % Arm Strength - Effects assists. Arm Accuracy - Causes throwing errors. Okay, I went alittle further with that then I had planned, and I also hope I didn't make a fool of myself by using "effects" over "affects" or just now using "further" over "farther". The main idea that I'm trying to express would be to make the player ratings a lot more dependant on each other. Rather than having one number that correlates to a players HR's, then one number to BA, ect., you'd have to effectively "scout" the players and base more of your player evaluation on past preformance. A similar concept could be applied to pitchers as well. Obviously something like this would be quite an overhaul, and of course is out of the question for 2007, but I think it would be neat if the ratings started to migrate in this direction. I haven't read much up on 2007, so who knows, maybe something similar is already starting to be implemented? Thoughts? |

It's 'affects'. What does 'LD%' mean? Line drives?
The one of those I really, really like is 'Approach'. I would love to have even just the three choices you list ('swing for the fence', 'neutral', 'put ball in play') without the infinite variety of a slider.

Ever played FPS BB Pro 96/98? Sounds like you described their physics-based baseball model, which at least made sense (although DIPS makes lots of sense too).
Hitters had 3 categories, "contact" was their pitch recognition/speed recognition/location recognition, "power" was basically bat speed/strength, and "speed" which influenced running, stealing success, fielding/reaction time. GB% (which also was LD/FB%) described the physical angle the ball would leave the bat, on average. So from there, you got a normal distribution around the average. There was even a "pull" rating which determined the average direction of balls hit, with high pull tending to more HR, especially for high power guys, and fewer gap doubles. Those ratings came together on every pitch to determine the outcome, and no one rating alone decided whether a hit was a HR or 2B or single or whatnot. What was interesting is there was no K or BB rating exactly, but you could get pretty predictable statistics out of the engine, as power hitters who swung for the fences would strike out more than equally powered hitters who hit line drives. And high contact guys would also be able to pick up on bad pitches, so contact also affected how often people walked. I do agree that gap power and homerun power are pretty much the same physical power, but I just imagine a line drive % being applied to the physical power that generates the two different power ratings in OOTP. So, I'm just working backward to reach the set of ratings you described. I wouldn't look for OOTP to move to the more extreme set of abstract ratings, but it would be nice to see the dual powers eliminated for a single power/GB% combination, or something along those lines.
