Have the type of pitches matter...

I'm sure this has been brought up. But right now, if you throw a slider in the game, it doesn't have any difference if you threw a fastball.

I think we're a bit of a way off from this, but it would be pretty cool. I mean, certain types of pitches make certain types of injuries more likely, some are easier on the arm, etc. Also, having a guy have to change his pitching style after an injury may shake up the piches a bit.

Also, whether you are a starter or a reliever many times depends on what pitches you have and what the quality of each pitch is. I would love to see the 'stuff' eliminated (see below) and have movement & control measured for each pitch. I'm not sure about velocity. That may only be relavent for a fastball.

Isn't 'stuff' just a combination of movement, velocity, and control? It seems rather redundant to track it separately.

Actually, it may show up in the groundball % that is on the players stat card. Though I am not sure how that is altered or edited.

Maybe as a player development option you can have guys add a pitch to their repertoire.

Hmm ... instead of having individual pitches matter, this idea could work if you just had it impact the overall ratings in some semi-random manner (after all, a new pitch doesn't always mean it's a good pitch).

It could also be something to devote Spring Training points to, just like teaching position players a new position. Add in the random opportunity for a player to pick it up on his own (as part of the standard development), and there's a workable model that doesn't require drastic re-programming for the game engine.
