Learn new position in Spring Training?

Didnt see any other posts regarding this, having done a search...so here goes.

OOTP 6.51 is the platform.

I have a 37 yr old OF who is not particularly good on defense, so I decided to cut down his points allocated for defense in Spring Training from 5 to 0, and use those 5 points to teach him a new position...1b. Only, when Spring Training was completed, the player had not learned 1b. He had retained his OF familiarities, but no ratings at 1b were created.

Did I do something wrong here? Was I wrong to pull the points out of 'Defense'? Is the player too old to learn a new trick? Has anyone else seen such a thing? Just wondering if there was any feedback or input on this. Thanks in advance!
