running from location other than My Documents

Long story short - I want to keep my OOTP files in a location other than My Documents.

But it seems that the .exe file looks there by default when launching the game.

How can I get the application to run everything from a different location on the hard drive?

Do the instructions in this thread still apply to the current version of OOTP?

1. Create a new folder where you'd like to store your OOTP data. For example, D:\MyOOTPData\data

2. Go into Game Preferences, and under Custom User Data Path, select where you would like to put all of your OOTP stuff, i.e. the folder you established in #1 above. The folder name must end with "\data"!

3. Quit OOTP

4. Find the "data" folder currently used by OOTP (by default, C:\Documents and Settings\user name\My Documents\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 8\)

5. Manually move the data directory and all subdirectories from there to the new folder you set up in #1. (Below is a screenshot of what it should look like when you're done.)

6. Start up OOTP

If you want to change where the .exe file itself is stored, then you're probably best off making a copy of your saved games, then uninstalling and reinstalling to the desired directory.

Update...

I changed the location preferences and moved the files, but I'm still getting an error:
"APP-FRAMEWORK::startup - unable to find the folder 'database'. Please reinstall Out of the Park Developments."

And of course, I can't go back and change the file preferences because I can't open OOTP.

Any suggestions? Or do I just need to reinstall?

As long as you can safely make a copy of your saved games, I'm fairly sure that uninstalling and reinstalling will be a safer and less frustrating experience.

And now that I've been moving files around, it's telling me that my game is corrupt. Says it can't load the world file. But the world file is 9MB and seems to be in the right spot.

Update...

I've uninstalled and reinstalled a few times, all with the same results - not being able to run the game with data in any location besides My Documents.

Apparently "custom user data path" doesn't do a whole lot. At least it doesn't make keeping your game files in a different location any easier.

My suggestion for anyone trying to do something similar:

- Install/Run the game with all of the default installation locations.
- If you prefer to not have the files kept in My Documents, move them out when you don't want them there, and move them back when you do.

Moving a file around shouldn't corrupt it unless your hard drive has errors. You may want to run a check.

However, if your world.dat file is damaged, you may be able to substitute in a world.dat file from another saved game without issue.

I've never had trouble installing the game to a non-default folder and keeping all of my saved games there. It's that custom user data path that always seems to cause trouble for people.

Agreed - the customer user data path doesn't seem to work as well as it should.

Regarding installation in a non-default folder - can you post a screenshot of what the folder structure looks like? It seems (at least to me) that a non-default installation results in a different structure, and that may have been throwing me off too.

Well, when you install OOTP 9 in a non-standard location, all of the saved game information and any of the other folders that would be put in My Documents (separate from the Program Files default location) get put in your installation folder instead. It's really much easier this way in my experience. You end up with everything in one place and don't have to worry about it.
