Cannot Assign a Player from College/HS to MLB Team?

I have to think I'm doing something stupid here. Have college/high school feeders set up and want to run our draft online and input the results myself instead of having to use the in-game draft. Want to just take a player, and assign him to a team from his old college/HS team.

However when I do so, he still shows up as playing for that college on the MLB team reports (specifically the Top Prospect list) which shoots him way down the rankings and off of it in most cases, despite being a 5 star prospect (as he's playing for a lower "team" than rookie ball). It shows COL as his level.

Is it really designed to work this way? Is there any work around for this?
