Maybe I'm going to sound like a complete newbie, but what are these widgets all about and what do they do exactly??

Well...

a) There are no widgets in OOTP 9. Not sure if you posted in the wrong forum by accident or not.

b) In OOTP X, the widgets are a different way to watch and play out your games where you can customize your display to contain what you want to see. You can change the field size or toggle on/off certain stats box to help you manage the game better. If you sim, then widgets are not pertinent for you.
