OOTP5 Extreme Slowness

I'm running a Pentium Celeron 750MHz with 384 MB of RAM, running Windows ME with Direct X 9.0 installed.

The problem is that the interface is almost too slow to use. Every click takes about 3-4 seconds to register before the next screen loads up at best, and sometimes as long as 8-10 seconds. I've tried disabling animation and sound, but that doesn't help. The same problem occurs even if not other programs are running.

Do you have any ideas about what might be wrong? Anything I can try?

Windows ME is the issue, I used it for about 6 months and had to constantly reboot 8-10 times a day just to get programs to run.

Hmmm... after some experimenting, I found that if I change my display from 32-bit color depth to 16-bit color depth the slowness issues go away. Everything runs very quickly now. I have no idea why this would make such a huge difference...? Does this sound like a display driver issue, maybe?

Definately sounds like a display driver issue. I would update them. Also, as Steve mentioned, Windows ME does a terrible job managing memory.

burn,
if you disable 3D-mode in the game configuration you'll find the interface much faster.

Steve's link is to how to speed up sim/save speed by diverting all available system resources to the game.

Thanks for the tip, rferry, that worked like a charm! OOTP5 is now running very fast in 24-bit mode and I'm very happy
