Listen To Mp3s While Game Is Running

I'd like to turn off the sounds so I can listen to my mp3s while the game is playing. I disabled the sounds, quit and restarted the game, but I still can't play my mp3s, the good old "Another program is using your soundcard..." error msg appears. Any ideas?
