Newly signed free agents go to A-ball?

Every time I've signed a free agent at the end of the season, they get sent to A-ball. I had one $10 mil. pitcher I almost didn't get into the rotation because he didn't automatically go where he was supposed to. Seems like if I sign a guy to a major league contract, he ought to go to my major league roster.

Was there enough room in the majors for him to be placed in the majors? Did you already have 25 men there?

And.. after you sign a $10M man... you should probably check to make sure he is where you want him before you sim

I think they do go to A-ball by default, even without a full big league roster. I never thought much about it however, I just move them up before spring training when setting lineups and rotations.

There was definitely enough room for him in the majors roster...and while it's true that checking is always good, in a game that's so automated in so many other ways it'd be nice to see that a player signed to a ML contract gets assigned to the majors right away.

But on the other hand... what if I signed a #6 starter as a backup.. and wanted to put him in the minors "just in case"??

The point edm and I are trying to make is.... if you do your lineups.. you wouldn't have to worry about it

*shrug*

The guy got into the rotation anyway. I'd rather worry about demoting a #6 at the start of the season that promoting a #1 from A-ball. Personal preference, I guess, but it just seems easier.

It is better to have them placed in the minor, because if they go to the major's if there is an open spot and you don't want them there are forget to move them then their "major league clock" begins to tick (the time they have as a 300K auto signee), BUT if they are left in the minors even if it is a ML ballplayer no real harm is done.

I will sign some border line players with the intention of keeping them in AAA in case of injuries on the ML roster. So in addition to what Steve said you also want to keep in mind what happens if this borderline guy was first assigned to the ML roster and won't accept the demotion to AAA I would then have to cut him and still pay him.
