Technical Problem - Observation
Spanky's All-Time Greats
This is just an observation on a nagging problem I have had while trying to import 100's of teams into OOTP5 (Ver. 12) from the Lahman's Database. Starting with teams from 1901 and working each year thru the early 1990's, I suddenly experienced an unexplainable program crash when I tried to import more players into my league file. I tried a variety of things to overcome the problem including defragging and deleting some unneeded players and even deleting some other programs to free up HD space (I had just over 1 Gig remaining). Nothing worked! So, to my disappointment and frustration, I had to start over. In doing so, I came across the very same problem. OOTP5 shut down (crashed) in the middle of importing players while I was into the 1980's. At first, I thought (as I did the last time) that there must be a numerical limit to the number of players that can be indexed into the program. Fortunately, I had just made a backup the night before and, before resigning myself to start over, I decided to make one last attempt to ressurrect my current work. First, I once again defragged my Hard Drive and I deleted another program thus freeing up in excess of 2 Gigs. I unzipped my backup into OOTP5 and began working from where I left off the night before. As I approached the YEAR and TEAM where I encountered the crash, I held my breath, and HIT the OK button to import. To my relief all when well without a hitch and I was able to import several more teams/players afterwards. At this point I am cautiously optimistic that I may be able to finish my project and one day soon finish creating Spanky's All Time Greats. I'm sharing this information in hopes of saving anybody else the level of frustration I have occassionally experienced. So, if your having unexplained program crashes - try defragging and freeing up at least 2+ Gigs of hard drive space before you hit your head against the wall. Regards Spanky |
