This comes under the same heading as the buglet where the 1b tosses to the pitcher, only to scoop his own throw out of the dirt...
Runner on first, liner to the shortstop, who catches it and, since the runner is too far off base, he (presumably the SS) steps on the base for the second out. For what it's worth, I *did* see this type of play where the second baseman caught a liner and unassistedly (is that a word?) doubled off the guy on first recently, but the shortstop, well, probably not so likely.

I've seen a similar one where the third baseman catches a liner and goes to second for the out. A little more likely that what Arbiter mentioned, but still far-fetched. What was the 2B doing that he was too busy to take the toss?

I've seen this occur in MLB games at least twice... it generally happens with a left handed batter up and the Shortstop shaded towards second makes the grab on the ball hit towards him and since he's going towards the bag takes it him self.
