Post Replacement starter can only work one inning?

My starting pitcher was injured on the second batter of the game. I removed him and put in my next starter (who was fresh). However, when I was back in the field for the 2nd inning, that second starter was already exhausted.

Sounds like something where the game is seeing the starter in the starting rotation and since he has no reliever rating and isn't in the bullpen of the pitching staff it tires him quickly to protect his use in the starting rotation.

(Note this is purely a guess)

Thanks for the info.

I had an extra SP which I was using as a MR but never changed his status as MR which really meant that he wasn't being used properly.

Learn something new every day.

Now, if I change his status from SP to MR, can I later change him back to SP without him loosing his starting abilities?

You should be able to do so, although if the player is very old, all his ratings may start declining, and that should be the only reason for him losing his SP abilities.
