Earlier today in another forum, I posted the following:
[quote]I am playing a fictional league where I manage one team (Atlanta). I'm on the sixth series of a season. In the first inning of the first game of the series, the team that I am playing (New York) loses their catcher, who is ejected for arguing a call. Cool. The player who goes in, however, has an * under Range and a 0 for Passed Balls. So I look to see who he is, and discover that he is a reserve first baseman. Also cool; except that I can't figure out why he is in there. Their back-up catcher seems able--no signs of injury when I check on roster and (after the game) on their Transactions page. So, I'm a bit torn: I think it's kind of a funky thing for the other team to have done; and I enjoy trying to run on the guy; but I'm a bit worried about the difference between taking advantage of something "real" that the other team is up to, versus taking advantage of a bug.
Also, when I look closer at New York's roster, I find more of this funny stuff. Their slugging 2B also has a * for Range, and it turns out that he is actually an SS, playing out of position. Again, I have mixed feelings: If they are moving him out of position to get another bat at SS, then that is cool. But, in the next game, the guy in the line-up at SS also has an * for Range: He is a 2B by trade! So, they now have their 2B and SS switched, to the detriment of their middle-infield fielding (or so one would think).
And it gets worse: They have a complicated OF platoon, but versus LHP (or RHP--I can't remember which), they end up with CF and LF switched, again so that the range of both players is * .
I don't know what is worse here--the unreality of the situation, or that, even with this makeshift line-up, they pounded the stuffings out of me in the first two games of the series. (I did salvage games three and four.) Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it possible that this is an intended feature of the game--that one team is funky about who plays where? If so, that's neat. If not, how might I fix it?
With respect to this last question, I did try to correct matters by going to New York's Depth Chart. There I found the slugging SS listed as the starting 2B, and the 2B listed as the starting SS (at least against left-handers). So I manually reversed roles, and saved things. But, when I started up the next game, the AI manager still had their positions reversed.

Since then, I have started a new series, with a new team (New Jersey), and, once again, the second baseman is playing shortstop for New Jersey, and the shortstop is playing second base. Similarly, the leftfielder and centerfielder have switched jobs. Now I think that this is a bug. |

FYI
Further comment similar in title only. When I converted my old OOTP3 league to OOTP4, my AAA 3B who did not have any rating for SS imported as a SS for primary position and his old (C) range for 3B.

Of course, I am also using v4b; I don't know if that has anything to do with it... |

Because now players do learn new positions in the minors.
