Opening player.dat File

I've tried opening the player.dat file with WordPad, NotePad and Word but can only see what appears to be encrypted or coded text.

Any clues on how to read it so that it can be edited?

Wait for a player editor to come out

. Seriously - don't mess with the PLAYER.DAT file, especially with a non-hex program like WordPad, NotePad or Word. It's like editing an EXE file in that the game will look for info in a specific location in the file, and if you add even one space in the wrong area this will cause the game to crash.
