OOTP Freezes when in-game sounds are turned on...
Every time I try to activate the in-game sounds, the game says wait for initiation and then I click ok, next the game goes into a playercard as if I clicked on a name on the field map, as I close the player card, OOTP freezes and shuts down. Thanks for your attention.

You may need to "disable" in-game sounds in "game setup". As you may or may not know adding sound to ANY program brings up the possibility for many more conflicts with other programs, drivers, etc on a PC.
You may try updating your sound card drivers, but not sure it will help. |

I also have this problem that the game crashes with in game sound turned on, either from the settings or from the music button on the in-game screen.
I've seen posts saying that we should just turn off the sound as it must be a conflict within our own PCs. Well there seem to be a lot of people with this problem and as for me, I have no problems with any other games at all despite the fact I'm still running win98 on a 366mhz pentium and have a crappy old 4mb sound chip built in.....but like I say, despite the fact that my system is from the stone age it runs everything (sound included) just fine, except for the sound in OOTP6. OOTP5 used to work fine for me but now it doesn't work either and the only thing I've changed was to update my directx to version 9. As far as I know it's not possible to revert to an older version of directx...perhaps if someone knows otherwise they'll say so. I'm pretty sure the last time sound worked for me in OOTP5 I was using directx7. So, while I'm sure the problem is probably caused by a conflict, I don't think it's fair to just brush us off by saying it's a problem with our own computers and that we should turn sound off. Maybe there's a problem with compatibility with directx9 on some OSs...I don't know, I only buy the games I don't write them. All I do know is that I meet the required spec for the game, as it was advertised, yet part of it doesn't work on my, or several others computers, judging by the posts in here the last week and there's no indication that this is going to be looked into at all. I know sound is a minor part of the game and quite rightly may not be at the top of any priorities for fixes, but at the same time it's a part that should work. Simply saying 'disable the sound' doesn't cut it for a response. If it's not something that's going to be looked at then a statement to that effect would at least let those of us with this problem know where we stand. If it is going to be looked at then it would be nice to know. |

As with any small company you can only test a game on just so many systems and configurations. Our test group was varied as far as OS, RAM, etc but to be realistic there is only so much testing that can be done and if we are being honest here I'd say a conservative guess on the possible number of PC configuration combinations is easily into the 1,000's if not 10,000's due to different motherboards, sound cards, video cards, driver versions, software programs and applications ALL of which can contribute to possible conflicts.
That being said, our desire is that all options would work on all systems and in a perfect world they would....but realistically speaking this isn't even possible with incredibly large software companies. Issues of this sort are always going to be a part of software development. I'll mention it to Markus. Just my "experienced" take on things. |

OK and thanks for the response. I wasn't trying to be unreasonable but previous responses on this subject seemed a touch dismissive. As long as you're aware there's an issue and will give it appropriate consideration that's fine with me.
Thanks again. |

Yes we are aware of it but "IMO" it shouldn't be a "high priority" item. There are literally 1,000's of possible reasons it doesn't work from having a particular program installed, to you IRQ settings, to a certain brand of hardware to a certain version of a hardware driver. I have let Markus know but I would count on alot of time going in this direction.

I had the same problem as Moody sox fan. It started with v5 and continued in v6 after I converted. I also noted that everything worked fine until I upgraded Direct X to 9. I agree the sound is not essential to the enjoyment of the game...but it did add to the realism when playing solo. Still there are other things that need Markus' attention.
