OOTP6.exe has generated errors - won't start

I have a Windows 2000 system and a computer that up until the weekend was running OOTP6.

I had the game crash and my whole computer stopped booting Windows 2000. I have no clue why Windows 2000 messed up..but I am not blaming OOTP6.

Basically...I had to reformat my harddrive and reload Windows 2000. Now..I tried to reinstall OOTP6 and I loaded my license and then when I click OOTP6...it gives me the error:

OOTP6.exe generated errors and has closed.

- I have downloaded and installed the latest Direct X drivers.
- I have reinstalled the game and this does not help.
- I have uninstalled the game and then reinstalled and it won't even give me the screen to enter my license.
- I have disabled 3d and sound.

I read the installation log and at the end it says:

Could not self-register: elicen40.dll three times...I don't know if this has something to do with it.

Does anyone know what may be causing the program file to stop working? I need help!

This example shows XP, but you need to find where this info is stored in Win2000 and see if this is the problem.

In XP: Control Panel>Admin Tools>Services. Make sure CtrLic is enabled.

Maybe it is named differently, well since it appears to be a "license" issue you're probably gonna get more help from the http://www.elicense.com folks.

I don't really have any reason to believe it is a license issue..the game won't start. I have no problem getting the license..it crashes when I attempt to start the game...after getting the license and everything. Is there a way to read the error log that it says it is creating?

I installed the program on another computer that is working and it has that same line in the install.log...so I don't think it is related to that. I am trying to figure out what the difference is between the two computers..but not having any luck.

When I start the game it says OOTP6.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created...

Anyone know how to read that error log?

Bogart, I'm also having problems with a Windows 2000 system, although I'm not getting an error message like you are. The install log did show that same problem you received.

Steve; I checked services as well, and the LicCtrl service appears to be started fine, but I'm not sure if that's what I'm looking for, or if that's a Windows service.

I'll e-mail ELicense and post the results here.

From an earlier thread, the elicen40.dll shouldn't even be trying to self-register, so it failing to do so shouldn't cause a problem.

What screen resolution and colour depth are you running at?
1024x768x16bit doesn't seem to work, but 1024x768x24 apparently does (I'll know for certain when I get some working hardware )

Wow, this is wierd, I just got the game to work... just clicked on the icon on the desktop and up it went. I have no idea what I changed, why it worked, or anything.

The only thing I could think of is installing WinAmp and therefore associating .wav files with some program, though I don't know what that would change in OOTP.

Edit- the game is still having trouble crashing, though at least now it's giving me an error in event viewer. It says it's an application error, and says; "The exception generated was c0000005 at address 77D5BD1A (I_RpcAsyncAbortCall)"

Don't know if this helps at all, but there it is.
