Game Crashes when monitor powers down and TRADE crash

I just purchased OOTP6 last week (have previously used 5 and 4) and I am having a couple of issues that I can't figure out. I wanted to let you know about them and see if anybody had any advice.

I am running Windows 98SE on an AMD Duron processor, 384 MB RAM, and a Nvidia GForce FX video card. The video card was just purchased last week, so the drivers are up to date and I installed DirectX 9 at the same time.

The first (and oddest) problem is that if I leave the game for a few minutes (while it is backing up the league or simming, for instace) and I stay away to the point where my monitor shuts down (15 minutes), the game does not recover when I come back. It doesn't seem to matter if the game is on the active screen or minimized, either way all I get when I open it is a black screen, surrounded by a very thin silver "outline" around the edges. I can still switch back and forth between other programs and even minimize the game by clicking roughly where the minimize button would be, but I can't ever get the game to start again. All I can do is CNTL-ALT-DEL to end the process, wait until I receive a message that the game is not responding, and end it. And then restart.

Unfortunately, if I was simming and it stopped for an email notification, this means that I have up to date standings, but I've lost all the stats since the last time the game saved. So I need to restore my last backup, which is rather annoying, especially since I am tempted to step away from the computer while it loads.

I have switched the system to never power down the monitor and go instead to a screen saver, and this seems to have alleviated the problem. Unfortunately, my second issue has made the game unplayable, and thus I haven't really spent much time working on it, so I can't say if this solves the problem for good.

The second issue I am having is that I can not trade anybody. I can get into the trade screen, pick the receiving team, and hit the Add a Player button. I can even right click on a play and add them to the trade. But if I try to left click on a player (to see MY scouts evaluation of them) the game crashes.

I did see another thread describing a problem similiar to this last one that included a workaround. I will try it tonight when I get home and hope it works. But I did want to let everyone know that this problem is affecting at least one more user than has previously posted. So I hope it can be fixed soon, especially since the workaround seems fairly complicated and repetitive.

BigMak found the trade crash fix for Internet Explorer users on Win 98 and Win ME pcs.

Go to control panel>Add/Remove Software...choose Internet Explorer...choose repair...A restart may be required, but it solved my problem for good.

The issue when monitor powers down is system specific, mine can power down and I have no problems but don't know of a fix.

Just to add to what rasnell posted. He is on Windows ME and does not have to repair before each use. I am on Windows 98 and have to repair before each time otherwise it will crash. Good luck.

Thanks to Rasnell and BigMak... I did see the fix for the trade crash and I will try it tonight. Hopefully that will provide a way to work with the game until the issue is fixed, if it can be.

Steve... I suspected the monitor thing was system specific, or all everybody would be up in arms about it. But since it doesn't happen with any other game or program I run, and doesn't seem to be a driver issue, I was hoping the powers that be might have some ideas on what is happening. To be honest, it doesn't make much sense to me. The game really shouldn't even be "aware" of the monitor powering down, as far as I know. But Windows in not my thing and I was curious if it had happened to anyone else.

Just throwing something at the wall here - could it be possible that a screensaver is coming on at that same time the monitor goes to standby? When I used a screensaver with V4 & V5 I never had any problems but after hearing so much OOTP and screensavers don't much get along I quit using them.
