Hit and Run doesn't work
I wasn't sure where to place this topic, but since I'm fairly confident there was a major change in logic from OOTP5 to OOTP6, I'll place it here.
The hit and run doesn't work in played games. Literally running at a sub-10% chance of making contact. I don't mean a sub-10% meaning making contact not very often; I mean literally about a 5% chance to make contact using players who have a minimum 70 average/70 avoid K's against good control/low K pitchers. BTW, as an aside, this option desparately needs foul balls, which strictly from observation is the most likely result of a hit and run.

If this is true about the Hit and Run not working. Then it's just one more thing that really hurts the enjoyment of playing out the games. I've stopped playing OOTP6, until certain issues are fixed, or at the very least working fairly well.

I too have noticed a great decline in the number of times contact is made. All too often, hit-and-run means "try to steal with a guarentee of taking off and a reduced chance of success." I don't think I've seen a single foul ball off a hit-and-run in over two seasons worth of play ...

Since I've played OOTP (v3), the foul ball has never been part of the hit and run possibilities, though it should certainly be. In OOTP6, as you say, it's a way of getting a guaranteed jump to steal--the "run" works, not the "hit."

Yes, this is a big problem. I started replaying the 1908 season as the Giant manager. To not be able to hit and run sucessfully in 1908 is very, very unrealistic. In John McGraw's memoir he says he seldom bunted a runner to second. He used the steal or more often the hit and run. So to not have that makes a realistic simulation of the dead ball days hopeless. Oh, well, maybe they can correct it in the near future. The game has a lot of strenghts but this is a major flaw. Was the hit and run better in earlier versions?

Prior to OOTP6 it seemed to work fine. It was reasonably predictable with high Hitting for Average and high Avoid K's (Batting Eye) ratings being good indicators of success.

Hit and run does appear to be broken in OOTP6.

Stealing and catcher arm ratings also seem to be out of whack, too.

Agreed, Rasnell, but that's been mentioned elsewhere.
I'm about to go back to OOTP5. There are too many things that just do not work in OOTP6.

Does anyone know if hit-and-run doesn't work in OOTP6 with the OOTP5 engine?

One of the hit and run complications in replaying past seasons from the database is the lack of stats on caught stealing before 1950. When the OOTP program reads that an individual stole 8 bases without ever being caught, it assigns to that player a very high base stealing rating. When you have an entire league that has never been caught stealing (since for most of the pre-1950 seasons that stat wasn't kept) you've got 6 or 7 guys on every team who are rated as great basestealers. So when the batter swings and misses on the hit and run, the baserunner is almost always safe. That's true of straight steals too. By the way, I'm actually pretty impressed with many aspects of the game (I never played version 5) and I'm confident that a few patches will make it my favorite stat based game. I really like the way it's so easy to fix problems from the data base like the one mentioned above concerning the lack of caught stealing ratings. It took me approximately a half an hour to go through the 1908 National League teams and reduce the the base stealing ratings and now I'm getting much better results.
