Can't open the program?

I'll just copy and paste what I sent to tech support here, and see if I can get a quicker response...

Hi,
I've been a user of OOTP6 for quite some time now, and have used it without any problems up until this point. I recently got a new computer, and removed OOTP6 from my old system and all, then went to go install the problem on my new computer. The old computer was running on Windows XP Pro, and the new on Windows 2000 Professional. I entered my license and that whole deal went smoothly, but whenever I try to open the program itself, it gives me this error message: "OOTP6.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created." I don't know where to find the error log, but perhaps that would help.

Is there a patch or something to let this program work on Windows 2000 Pro? Or is that not the problem?

Please let me know.

Thanks,
Andrew Chapin

That doesn't appear to have worked either. Anything else I can try? Or is this program simply incompatible with Windows 2000?

i run it under Win 2000

Microsoft brought out some Security Patches the last weeks maybe they interfere a

Also some Virus scanner dected OOTP as a Infection

check your Log for any errors maybe they give you a hint

if not go back to a older Direct X version and check you elicense control

There are some services that various programs rely on that, if not set on "automatic", the programs will not function. You should be able to get the game running at the cost of system performance by going to Start, Run and type services.msc. Then double-click on each service and set to Automatic. If you can't get into services.msc, go to Start, Run and type, msconfig. There you'll see a tab "services". Enable all the services.

Restart your computer.

If the game works after that, when you have the time, try setting each of the services back to thier previous setting, one by one, until you find the one that caused the problem.

Ah! DON'T forget to make a list of the of the services you change their original settings so you can undo the auto sets on the unecessary services.

If this doesn't work, you've got deeper system incompatibilities. Keep your fingers crossed!

I did what you suggested, and it didn't work. Is this program really just not compatible with my system? Theres nothing unique or odd about my system hardware or software wise that would cause something like that...

It's for sure not 2000 alone, a poll taken in the last few weeks had several folks running 2K w/o issues. Have you checked for virus', spyware, etc?

I just changed my security package (went with what the cable internet people provide--Cogeco, here in stinky windsor) and now I cannot open the game either, keep getting a error report. I also have tried all of your suggestions (except for uninstalling and reinstalling--not sure how to do that and dont want to lose a licsence) If anyone has any other ideas what so ever, let us know...

Is she the "admin"? Some programs only run in the admin setting.

I think you've found the probable cause. Security software is often the culprit of the game not functioning properly. You may need to uninstall your Cogeco and find another solution for internet security. To be sure before uninstalling, shut down your security software by going to Start, Run and type 'msconfig'. Then on the Startup tab, find all the entries that run Cogeco. Uncheck the boxes of those and restart your computer.

Then check OOTP.

You also mentioned that your wife's login can run OOTP, so I guess that means that your only problem is getting it to run on your login. Is that correct? have you actually played the game from your wife's login? If so, I can run you through the process of getting her settings imported to your login. Let me know.

Well bad news, the game may have opened in my wife's login last night but I didn't play a game, and of course today it won't open in her login. I have done everything suggested except uninstall the security system or the game itself. I tried the msconfig sartup thing and nothing chaged...While I am reluctant to uninstall the security, I guess I will have to give it a try later tonight. Thanks for all the help so far...if there are any other ideas, shoot them out to me

Well the end result of all this was to remove the cable company's security software and revert to my Norton...two other programs were disabled, one of them my wife's work email (bbs). So I uninstalled and voila (thats french for "ta da") OOTP6 was working just fine. Kind of a drag considering the price of cable internet....nothing is ever free...thanks for all the attention, now if I can only get back the two hours of my life ....
