Saying farewell to a boxing legend
by Pete Ehrmann, Special to OnMilwaukee.com

Middleweight Art Hernandez fought 10 times in Milwaukee during his career.
There hadn't been professional boxing in Milwaukee for three years -- the longest drought in the onetime ring stronghold going back to the 1880s-- when a chunky, soft-spoken Omaha middleweight brought the game back to life in 1966. Art Hernandez beat Doug MacLeod at the then-Milwaukee Auditorium on January 13, and over the next six years Hernandez fought here 10 more times, became a top-ranked 160-pound contender and one of Milwaukee's favorite adopted sons.
"This is my lucky city," said Hernandez before he won his sixth straight main event here, a 10-round decision over Rudy Rodriquez at the Auditorium on May 27, 1968. In an interview 10 years ago, Hernandez recalled, "The people of Milwaukee were great and treated me with the utmost respect."
Hernandez died on August 26 in Omaha. He was 69.
Born in Minatare, Nebraska on January 17, 1941, Hernandez and his two-year-older brother, Ferd, learned how to box as toddlers from their father Perfecto, a former fighter. Ferd also went on to become a middleweight contender.
The Hernandez brothers both won preliminary fights on a card at the Milwaukee Arena on March 7, 1963. Then Ferd relocated to Las Vegas, and though Art fought a draw with former middleweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson in Omaha in 1964, his career stalled as boxing there went in the doldrums.
His fights in Milwaukee revived the sport here and Hernandez's career. His biggest local win was a 10-round decision over third-ranked middleweight Gomeo Brennan at the Auditorium on September 21, 1967. But Hernandez's most memorable Milwaukee fight was against local Hispanic middleweight Vidal Flores at the Eagles Club on February 3, 1969.
"He was a countryman," said Hernandez in an interview 10 years ago. "I never liked to go against a fellow countryman." But that wasn't all of it.
Flores was 34, and the fight was only his 18th as a pro and his first 10-rounder. Hernandez, 27, was a veteran of 46 bouts against the best middleweights in the world.
They fought at a bristling pace, and going into the final round it was even. Hernandez won the 10th round and the decision after he knocked Flores' mouthpiece out with a right uppercut in the final minute and then split open the local fighter's mouth with another hard right.
"He made me fight my hardest to win a decision," recalled Hernandez in 2000. "He could really take a punch. In fact, the uppercut I hit him with split my glove. After the fight, my dad hung up that pair of gloves and when they dried out, two of Vidal's teeth fell out of that split glove. That gives you an idea of how hard a hit he could take."
Ten stitches closed the cut on Flores' lip, and up to his own death in 2007, Flores would look at the scar in the mirror every morning at shaving time and say, "Hello, Art!"
While Hernandez won the North American Boxing Federation middleweight title, he never fought for a world title. Another fight that never happened was the one proposed when Nebraska observed its centennial as a state in 1967, and somebody thought it would be a fun to commemorate the occasion by matching Nebraska's two middleweight contenders named Hernandez.
Art and Ferd agreed to fight, but a higher power intervened, Art later recalled.
"Mom said no."

My favorite way to play OOTP is to start a league in 1876 and mimic real life baseball using fictional franchises and players. But I've found that I don't really like the stats from 19th century baseball and I'm always rushing through the years to get past WWII where I can start to enjoy the numbers. But I do like the evolution that goes on in the early days of baseball and I miss that by starting a league in 1969.

So, I thought, what if they played 80's baseball from the get go?

And this league was born.

We're starting in 1876 with an 8 team National League and we'll be matching the structural changes that baseball has made over the years, but the stats and finances will always be from the 80's. We also won't be playing the abbreviated schedules of those days. Each season will be 154 games until 1961 (or as close to 154 we can get without going over and keeping the schedules balanced).

Player and team names will be appropriate for the actual year of the league, not from the 1980's.

I also plan on matching the minors to the times, but not exactly, as OOTP doesn't handle it well when a franchise has multiple teams at a given level.
For the 19th century minor league data is sketchy, so I'll be using the "Independent Team Alliance" as the default league for a level if there aren't enough real life teams to give everyone a spot. In 1876, there are NO real life leagues, so all minor league teams are in the "ITA"s. Think of the ITA as an abstraction. It is not meant to be an actual league. It's where we put teams, whose actual leagues cannot exist for some reason, but in our imagination they are in those other leagues, not in the ITA. Confused? Good. By the time we get to the 20th century the need for the ITA's will evaporate.

All franchises for the major leagues are chosen at random, with larger cities having a better chance at landing a team. Population in the year we need to fill a spot is used as the criteria. The only caveat is that a city must be at least a market size of 2 to qualify (I have a formula to determine market size) and if a team moves or folds, its city must sit out at least one season.

Also, one of the bugs in OOTP has led to a fortuitous thing. I have never liked the idea of using feeder leagues. However, there is a bug in OOTP that makes editing player ratings impossible unless you disable finances. And editing ratings is so important to me that I have always disabled finances in my leagues. However, I have found that you can edit the ratings of players in the feeder leagues and still keep finances in the majors. And I have come to love my feeder leagues!

For this league we have two feeder leagues: HS and College. The NHSAA is made up of 60 high schools and the NCAA has 24 universities. For the high schools, I've chosen the best programs in the country over the past decades to be included and the NCAA is made up of the SEC and the All-American Conference, which is what I thought were the 12 best non-SEC baseball programs of the recent past.

Anyway, I'm tired of explaining. I've been working for the past few weeks getting everything set up and I'm ready to play. I've decided that I will not take a team until 1962, when I will join one of the expansion National League teams and play out every game. Until then, I will be simming weekly and posting updates at least monthly (game time).

I have never tried historical play before and I have been reading trying to understand how it all works. What I want to do is start at the beginning on the 1991 season with my Atlanta Braves and pilot them through their golden years. I am using the Spritze DB with Real Teams, High School, No Asians from the Padresfan site. Essentially I want a fictional sim but with real players, so the players are drafted with their real team and then the development engine kicks in and they have to navigate their way through the minors. The main problem I am having is that when I loaded the database tons of top players are in the free agent pool. Whole teams are missing most of their teams to free agency. The Yankees have a bunch of 22 year olds starting for them and Don Mattingly is a free agent. What did I do wrong?

This is my first time playing OOTP, I have the newest version, and Im about 1 month into my first season in a fictional league. I play out all of my games and I have an odd problem. While all of my infielders have a defensive rating of 70 or above on a 1-100 scale and my outfielders a 60 or above rating I have yet to have an inning where the opposing team gets less than 2 hits. The ratings of my pitchers are about average for the league and my ace has very high stuff and movement ratings. Whenever the AI team is batting and they make contact its either a ground ball thru the gap, a fly ball my fielders cant get to or an error. And whatsmore if they hit a dribbler to the mound or something by my count they beat the throw from the pitcher 3 out of 5 times. And often times the runner has a terrible speed rating and he still beats the throw. How can this be? What makes it worse is every time Im up to bat its a 1-2-3 inning. I thought maybe I had a terrible scout and my players were much worse than I thought but he is rated as "excellent" across the board. Is this some kind of bug? Do ratings count for anything in this game? Why would my fielders rarely make outs when they have good defensive ratings and are supposedly in Great moods and never show any lack of effort in their personality? Im just wondering if this is how it is or if its possibly just some fluke that my players are playing terrible defense right now or what cause I feel like im playing mlb 2k or something even though at this point mlb2k seems a little more believable and thats saying something.

Let me know if u r interest6ed i plan on posting an uploading.com link and send it to padresfan also.
i will leave it predraft but am not 100% sure that without an AL league it will work. I deleted the AL after league creation and moved the teams to the NA that belong there.

let me know what else might be needed.
When i play the league i plan on having good players on the Chicago White Stockings and eventually on the White Sox. so i will not draft the players to their accurate teams, but you can.

What I've done so far: created a ~340 team league (1 subleague, 32 divisions) with each of the D1 NCAA schools.

I'm working on the financials of it - I'd like to see a disparity between teams, ie Texas or FSU beating up on some tiny Atlantic-10 school, and I think financials is the way to do it.

Would setting each team's market size based on the school's enrollment work? Maybe set the market size by conference (Big 10=20, MAC=5, something like that?)

Looking for creative ideas!
Thanks!
