Ok, I've been wanting to this for a while and although it's an MMA sim, I think it could be an enjoyable read for you guys. I've been running a fictional MMA universe for 7 years of game time and I've toyed with the idea of bringing in some MMA legends and see how they fare. The year is 2006, Randy Couture will be making his MMA debut at age 22. I'll expand on the backstory of the universe as Randy's career progresses. For now, let's see if he can make it out of the preliminaries and on to the main card of my company.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
GAMMA 102: The Reaper Returns

Staples Center, Los Angeles, CA

Friday, 21st July, 2006

HW Division Prelim (3x5 minutes)

Randy "The Natural" Couture (0-0)

VS

Frank "The Baby Bull" Sheedy (31-9-1)

The opponent: Frank Sheedy (38 years, 6'4", 257 lbs) is a solid journeyman who is currently enjoying a 4-fight win streak. He has had some success on the regional and indy-scene but never left a serious mark in the big leagues. Age has taken its toll on the wrestler, diminishing his grappling skills and cardio significantly. He still has some pop in his right though and outweighing Randy by 30 pounds, a flash KO is always possible.

The fight

Round 1: Couture immediately sought to take this fight to the ground but Sheedy was equal to both attempts. Frank Sheedy couldn't get much of an offense going but controlled Randy against the fence for a solid portion of the round. An extremely close but uneventful round.

Round 2: Sheedy sprawls another takedown attempt and hits Randy with a couple of punches from the front-facelock position. Randy manages to score some jabs but also has another takedown attempt blocked. Couture stings Sheedy with a punishing right hook. Score it 10-9 Couture

Round 3: Sheedy repeatedly tries to score with some big uppercuts but Randy easily avoids them. Sheedy blocks another takedown attempt and backs Couture against the cage. Score it 10-9 for Sheedy

the verdict: Ramiro Vasquez scores it 29-28 Couture
John Sheringham has it 30-27 Sheedy
Albert Mailer scores the bout 29-28 Couture

Randy Couture (1-0) beats Frank Sheedy by SD

After reading the excellent career sims/what ifs that have been posted lately of Teo Stevenson, Greg Page, Laszlo Papp, Mickey Rourke et al, I have decided to run one of my own. I will continue to run my boxing uni A New Dawn, but I also fancy having a crack at something with a beginning and an end to it.

I've often wondered how Tony Ayala would have fared if he hadn't commited his atrocious crime and gone to jail, against the 'Fabulous Four' of Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, and Duran, whom he was calling out. My curiosity has been piqued even more recently whilst reading the excellent 'Four Kings' by George Kimball, so I've decided to run a Tony Ayala career sim, and see how it pans out.

Also, whilst working in Nottingham the other day, the hometown of Kirkland Laing, who many feel is the best British boxer never to win a world title [I myself have always thought it was Herol Graham], I wondered how well he could have done if he had dedicated himself. After beating Duran, if instead of dissappearing for a year and then returning to the ring only to lose to someone nobody had ever heard of, if he could have capitalised on the Duran win. So I'm thinking of throwing that in as well as he was also at the same weight and era as the aforementioned guys.

The athletically gifted Jeffries was to fight his first ever 10-rounder as a tune-up for the upcoming tournament, but instead he blew journeyman Robby Allen out of the arena in only 5 rounds.

From the beginning of round one till the end of the fight, it was clear that this fight had only two possible outcomes. Most likely it would be a KO for James Jeffries, but the possibility that he was going for the experience of fighting 10 rounds, before he needs to exactly that in his quarterfinal bout against Gus Ruhlin, did surface the mind. It never looked like anything but a blowout as Robby Allen, who went into the fight with an unimpressive 16-11 record, had little answer to the fast and crisp punching of the gifted 24 year old. In the 5th the referee decided to spare the bloodied and bewildered opponent of more punishment. Jeffries was very aggresive and never stopped throwing punches, and even though he did only connect at a rate of 39,9% he still landed four times as many punches than Allen per round. It should be very exciting in March as "The Boilermaker" is fighting Gus Ruhlin, who holds an undefeated record in 21 fights of 20-0-1 with 10 KOs, on a 1/4 finals doubleheader, with the other fight being between irish hard-hitter Tom Sharkey and colombian ditto Ricardo Torres.

On the undercard of tonights main-event canadian Sandy Ferguson improved his record to 10-1-1 with 2 KOs as he scored a 6th round TKO against phillipine Nestor Ellema who dropped to 21-4 with 17 KOs. We also saw an exciting battle of undefeateds that saw Fred Russell improve to 7-0 with 3 KOs as he finished Denver Ed Martin in three rounds, which drops him to 4-1 with 2 KOs. The opener saw Jim Jeffords have an easy time improving his record to 8-0 with 4 KOs as he needed two rounds to get the knockout against Meqran Matari who drops to 13-20-3 with 4 KOs.

Soon, we will be publishing a presentation of the 8 fighters, who have been given a shot at being the first ever heavyweight champion of the world. Three of these fighters will be in action in January next year as Jack Johnson, Mexican Pete Everett and Gus Ruhlin have tune-ups on another exciting card.

I have time for a new project and have decided to go with a strange and wonderful combination. A fictional universe based solely on famous film actors.

Starting in 1920 during the silent period and going foward year by year the universe will use famous actors as its fighters and directors as its trainers and lastly producers as its promoters.

The anaolgies can be taken further with critics as boxing writers, studios as famous gyms and so on.

The ratings will be based on how great a star or actor they were with individuals such as Chaplin and Chaney great fighters and lesser supporting actors fillng in the journeymen status within the universe.

Individuals will fight when they were actually active so this will mean they have hugely long careers but are only considered at prime in the years they had great movies out.

So for example Fairbanks is at prime for the twenties but goes post prime and quickly end from 1929 when the huge flop taming of the shrew came out.

Another example would be Brando who would be prime from the early fifties to early sixties then go post prime until 72 when he made he godfather then stay at prime until 74 when he would be inactive and at post or end until his death.

All actors will be within one division heavyweight and with the large number of quality fighters that will mean it will be a real achievement to get to become world champion let alone stay there.

commisions will be based on cinema organisations such as national board of review, new york film critics, oscar academy etc.

Replay starting in 1940/45

New computer, new universe. I had pretty good succes with my heavyweights universe that ended 6 months or so ago, so i decided to do the same thing, only involving all the weightclasses and starting 20 years earlier because i did not wanna start at the exact same point in time, i did not want to go back to where are all the fighters are just names to me, and i just couldnt start a universe with all the weightclasses and leave out the great Sugar Ray Robinson, Willie Pep or Rocky Marciano.

I started by bringing in all fighters debuting from 1940 to 1945 and then a massive number of zero's to pad the records as i like to have lots of undefeateds. Nothing greater than a battle of undefeated prospects to burst a young fighter onto the world scene.

The coverage starts in January, 1949, with Willie Pep so far being the most impressive guy p4p, although i am yet to bring in the first world championship fights. This will happen in the beginning of 1950, with 8 man tourneys in all divisions.

I have the fighters split in four groups:

Beginning (1116 fighters): All fighters at Beginning career stage, all Pre-Prime or End fighters with a negative record and all Prime or Post-Prime fighters ranked in the bottom 20 %.
This group is massively overpopulated at this point due to a minimum of fighters having made it to Prime.
These guys fight 6 round-fights.

Club (797 fighters): All at Pre-Prime or End with a positive record and those who are not in the best 40 % or the worst 20 % of the rankings.
Club fighters compete in 8 rounders.

Main (39 fighters): The top 40 % of the rankings, required that they have either moved to Prime or have fought at least 25 bouts.
10 round-fights only.

World Class (none yet): Handpicked by me, all top 5 fighters, most top 10 fighters and then the superstars. I pick fights for these guys.
10 or 12 rounders.

I will auto-schedule fights for each group and then run through to pick out the fights i wanna put on the fight cards for that month. This is done for Club and Main.

There will be some movement from one weight-class to another when it seems logical. If one is available i will use the rating in the database, if not i will use the weight class change thing someone made in these forums.

There will be a quick run through of the weightclasses and then the action will start with fight cards for January, 1949.

1980+ World Champions
"South Lawn Fights"<O:p</O:p
This universe will start out in the year 1980, the decade when I first became a boxing fan. The universe has no set in stone rules at this point. It is very loosely being done, at least initially. As time goes on I’m sure guidelines will be added and changed as seem to make sense. For the most part what I’ll be doing is rereading old boxing magazines starting with the 1980 issues of Ring Magazine. Each month I’ll schedule fights as I see fit. The universe is going to be a combination of what actually happened in history combined with fights that didn’t take place which I would like to have seen. I’m sure as the months roll by in the universe new fights will become appealing and necessary.

Since this is all pretend and fantasy, I’m going to start off with what I’d love to have seen actually take place……the WBC and WBA Champions in each division will fight one another to unify the titles. From that point forward they will be known as the WORLD CHAMPION. There will still be WBC and WBA world title holders, but that is EXACTLY what they are. The world title holder of that organization, which is a significant accomplishment and worthy achievement, but it does not make the fighter the WORLD CHAMPION.

Hell, who knows maybe I will keep the belts forever unified. Like I wrote earlier, I’ll see how it plays out. The world rankings used will initially be the actual Ring Magazine rankings from March 1980. In the Ring March 1, 1980 rankings there were 12 recognized weight divisions and a recognized WORLD CHAMPION in 10 of those divisions. In the 2 divisions without a recognized linear champion the WBC and WBA belt holders were ranked as the 1# and 2# contenders (heavyweight with Larry Holmes-John Tate and lightweight with Jim Watt-Ernesto Espana). All world title fights were 15 rounds!

There might be a few tournaments. Who knows! (I love tournaments.)

GUIDELINES:
All fights that historically really happened will take place as they really did in real life. Fights in the universe will need to be fought around those fights. When a title changed hands in real life, it will in the universe. If that fighter no longer is holding the belt in the universe, then the historical fight will be considered a non-title bout or maybe a title shot eliminator for that organization.

The universe might once in awhile spin off to focus solely on one or more divisions, or even on a particular fighter. There might be some “WHAT IF....?” segments. For example:
“What if Salvador Sanchez had never been tragically killed in a car accident?”
“What if George Foreman came out of retirement in 1980?”
“What if (insert name) came out of retirement?”
“What if Tony Ayala had not committed crimes and never gone to prison?”
“What if the plane carrying the USA amateur boxing team had never crashed in 1980?”
“What if Mark Gastineau had never become a football player and instead had gone 100% into boxing, turning pro in 1980?”
“What if the United States had not boycotted the 1980 Olympics?”

The list is virtually endless of possibilities. I’m not sure how far I’ll go with this universe. It might just be for the year 1980 with the purpose of unifying all the WBC and WBA belts. Or, maybe it will carry on into future years and possibly meet up with the “WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS” universe that takes place in 1992 and unifies all 4 belts. Might go month to month, might skip months at a time. What will or could happen is fairly wide open. Thinking of throwing in some current/historical events that actually took place at the time, as a way of gauging where we were at in history and to add some color to the universe.

If a reader has a particular fighter that they would like to see included in universe fights, or a specific fight, post it or send me a PM. I don’t promise that they will be included, but do promise to try. I find the posting of universe results more interesting when others are interested in the result. That said, sometimes the request might not fit into the universe plans. Anyhow, I hope that anyone reading this enjoys it. I welcome comments and feedback.

The story of Laszlo Papp, the Hungarian middleweight, is known by all who are versed in boxing history. The first boxer to win three Olympic gold medals was in many respects a victim of the Cold War era.

Living under the repressive Hungarian communist regime, Papp's professional boxing career was truncated. After he won his third gold medal in 1956, the Hungarian government allowed Papp to compete professionally in a constrained manner.

At this point he was thirty-one and near the end of his peak period. His fights were limited to contests against European boxers. He did indeed distinguish himself and was in line for a title shot when the Hungarian government essentially ended his freedom travel. He hung up his gloves in 1964 at the age of thirty-eight.

Sadly, Papp never had the opportunity to fight the top middleweights of his era--Sugar Ray Robinson, Gene Fullmer, Carmen Basilio, and Joey Giardello.

This career simulation will begin in the fall of 1952 and deal with what might have been had Papp turned professional five years earlier and was allowed free range to pursue his career without the constraints of a totalitarian government.

I selected this particular point as a result of the near convergence of two important events in the summer of 1952. In June of that year, Robinson lost his bid for the light heavyweight crown to Joey Maxim. He then retired from boxing and didn't return to the ring until the beginning of 1955.

Six weeks later, the Helsinki Olympics concluded, and Papp picked up his second gold medal. With the middlweight title vacant due to Sugar Ray's retirement, this would have been an ideal time for a twenty-six year old Laszlo Papp to enter the professional ranks.

Thus, the simulation will present Papp at his peak. For those who followed my Teofilo Stevenson simulation last year, the approach will be somewhat familiar (at some point, you might even see Skip Bailey!). There's really no point of termination in a specific sense, although there will be several critical crossroads--the first being the return of Ray Robinson in 1955. So I pretty much plan to go with where the results of Papp's fights take me.

I expect to get the sim set up and running in early December but wanted to post this preview before I got too deeply into the project. With both the Stevenson career and my current Partial Eclipse of the Sonny, you have provided me with ideas, insight, and most importantly, inspiration. So expect nothing less from all of you on this project.

This doesn't mean that the Partial Eclipse uni is going on the back burner far from it! I view it as a coninuing boxing soap opera, although it has taken on Wagnerian proportions. I'm in it for a long haul (at least the next two years).

BigBoyBrackey inspired me by demonstrating that you could run a career sim and a broad based uni at the same time and still maintain a hgih quality in both.

Quite frankly, for the past two years, I've been confined pretty much to the heavyweight division with my unis, and shifting to another division is appealing. Also, the Eclipse lumbers along with the end pretty far down the road. A career sim gives me something with a bit more focus and a faster pace.

In a number of respects, I think (at least hope:)) that by running two unis concurrently, ultimately they'll feed off of each other.

That said, please let me have you views and suggestions.
