Version 0.9.31 Game Update Now Available

Our newest game update, Version 0.9.31, is now available, including a data update.

You can download the new PC version at:

Installation instructions: After you download the file just install it over your existing game (you don't need to un-install the old version first!). Make sure to select the correct path to your game if needed. (this link should avoid the problems we had earlier with older cached versions, but you may still want to double-check when you start the game that it's version 0.9.31 - look at the bottom of the startup screen, it should read "Version 0.9 Beta Build 31.")

Saves from earlier versions are not compatible with this version!

And, as announced in the Mac thread, FHM for Macs is now available for purchase:

A couple of notes on the notes below:

-the new name generation system is, for the moment, working at the national level, e.g. every Swedish player is named from the same list of names (lists, actually, there's a small chance for non-Swedish names.) Obviously, this isn't optimal for countries like Canada, where there are big regional variations in the names of players, most prominently players from Quebec having French-Canadian names. So we're going to implement provincial-based naming as soon as we can make some changes to the way the xml file that governs the game's geography is set up (Andreas is the one that'll be doing that, so we're at the mercy of his OOTP workload there.) But once that's in and YZG, the names researcher, has a chance to get it all set up and we work out any bugs, this will be the best naming system you've ever seen in a sports management game.

-the new filling system for incomplete data, naming system, and junior league fill during initial setup are part of a player generation/development overhaul that gets its final step added next: a new player generation system that will add a new class of 14-year-olds every year rather than providing ad hoc fills higher up the development ladder as it does now, and will do so in a manner designed to keep the talent pool consistent and realistic. We're going to start implementing that tomorrow, and are aiming to release an update that will include it before most of us head to New York in the middle of next week. With all that in and the game's player pool finally populating and developing realistically, we can start taking serious steps at improving everything related to player evaluation and comparison - trading, signing, scouting, and other roster management issues.

-league-specific goals per game and other similar settings are all in the database now, but still not working in-game yet. Hoping to have this done by next week's update.

-finally, a known issue: a small number of real players are receiving default placeholder names ("Jim" for first name and/or "Unknown" for last) for reasons we haven't been able to identify yet. We'll get that fixed in next week's update, but it's not worth holding the rest of the update for right now.


Changes/Fixes/Additions:

Bug fixes:

Playoff stats now display properly on player stats screen.
Filtering to Goalie Stats on the league leaders/player stats screen no longer breaks the links to the player profiles there.
Links to teams in the standings screen of the Mestis/Suomi-Sarja playdowns no longer leads to the wrong team.
KHL teams should now sign free agents during the season.
Error in hidden attribute calculation from templates fixed.
Bug where some players received all 1's in hidden ratings fixed.
Mislabeled Adaptablity and Ambition attributes corrected.
Free agents now remain sorted when moving to next page of list.
Players in age-based leagues should now be moved away properly by the nonplayable transactions system once they "graduate."

Changes:

Mac version now available.
New naming system implemented - generated players no longer all getting English names.
New home screen for the user (while employed).
New system for filling out incomplete player ratings and data.
Generic junior/college/under-20 leagues now filled with players during setup, should provide sufficient draftees for junior leagues and keep the player pool normal-sized until the regeneration engine can fill the 14-to-20-year-old gap in the starting database.
GM now gets a reminder to reduce the protected list before an upcoming draft.
Some commissioner mode editing re-enabled, specifically Salary Cap editing, changing the trade deadline day, and changing the active roster size (increase the last one with caution, going too large will lead to player-hoarding behaviour by AI teams.)

Database Changes:

Players with NHL debuts up in 1994-95 and 1995-1996 now included in historical database.
Leagues/countries with significant amounts of updated data: NHL, AHL, NCAA, OHL, QMJHL, KHL, Finland, France, Sweden, UK.

Finally getting some playtime in on this now that the school year is over. Noticed after patching that the phantom file from my last go-round was still there. Or, rather, the name of it was, although the saved game had been deleted some time ago. Still no option that I see to delete previous saves from in-game. Is that coming soon, especially since previous saves aren't compatible with the latest versions? Also, the 'release/unlicense' button' didn't seem to do anything, so I went ahead and uninstalled/reinstalled to get rid of the phantom saved game, and it asked me to relicense the game. Did the process of uninstalling release the license, or did relicensing use my second license?

Like the new Home page when employed, but really dislike the option for only shoots right. I know Jeff said that if it isn't ticked it means they shoot left, but it shows no info, instead. Just annoys me is all.

Is the design of the game going to be final? Whilst easy to use and intuitive, I find the choice of colors very dull. This is obviously a minor deal that might already be on the list before final release in September - but I figured I'd ask.

Good to see change Trade Deadline Date was turned on hopping in next one Expansion Draft,Randomize Cities,move Teams Around,Bryouts and Money in NHL Trades,rest of Roster Rules,Drafted 2 are turned on. E' League Option that includes Minor Leagues.

Also hope past saves would work so Logos don't revert back to Fictional and for a saved Game that would start as of this Years NHL Draft because 2012/13 season is already over and the NHL is in the postseason.

I noticed that the player photos are not displayed when I click on a player's name on the "Active Roster".
Anyone else have this happen with build 0.9.30 and/or 0.9.31?

No, the look of the game is definitely going to get some work, likely in the next month. When we're all in New York next week, Sebastian, Daniela, and I will get a chance to talk about it in person, then she has a couple of weeks blocked off after the return to work on the changes.

I agree with this. I find it pretty annoying as well, and I don't think it should be too much to ask for them to configure so that it shows right or left distinctively... I'm also pretty laid back, so if it takes them a long while to develop and perfect this feature, it's no big deal.

There are still a lot of features I would like to see fixed / added but I am also liking what I see out of each version. Glad it is going along the way it is, keep up the good work guys!

I think it's not so bad, but perhaps a way to customize the layout could be added to future releases.

Have you made any changes to the RFA/UFA? I don't feel like installing it again until that it's fixed because it made the game unplayable for me. Shattenkirk among other good young players who are RFA are UFA after the first season.

I don't know what the problem is but I guess their teams aren't giving them qualifying offers or something? but even then it says UFA on John Gibson even though he's signed to ELC contract and is RFA...
