(Dynasty) Montreal Canadiens

Here is my Dynasty:

For this game I am setting myself some goals. I hope to remain realistic in that I must keep a certain amount of a homegrown element to the team. This is Montreal after all! We all know ways to make exactly the team we want by acquiring players however we can. I will right my logic and justification behind all my trades. I am not playing in any way to bend the rules and yes I can get fired. My actions tend to even out as I over and under pay jut like every other GM.

First, here is an evaluation of the players in place. I will evaluate them based on what the game ranks them as not as my own love of each player is.

Goaltenders:

There is currently a log jam of capable tenders in Montreal. Of course there is no reason to look to hard behind Carey Price as he is an elite tender who will shoulder the vast majority of the load. He is signed for 5 seasons so there is no immediate worry for a replacement and hope to re-sign him.

Behind Price are 2 veterans and 2 prospects of note as well as useless fodder taking roster spots. I plan on picking one of Devan Dubnyk and Peter Budaj to serve as backup while Dustin Tokarski and Zach Fucale mature for the role.

Defence:

Again there is a gem here as PK Subban is number one at the blueline. Andrei Markov, Alexei Emelin, and Josh Georges finish up the top 4. Mike Weaver is the only other dman that interests me in the veterans, leaving Francis Bouillon and Douglas Murray as trade bait. Propects Nathan Beaulieu, Jared Tinordi, Magnus Nygren, and Greg Pateryn will look to fill that last spot and call ups.

Forwards:

The current offence leaves a lot of opportunity but a lot of cleanup will be needed. On the veteran side there are Tomas Plekanec, Tomas Vanek, Max Pacioretty, and David Desharnais that promise some decent scoring. Young guns Alex Galchenyuk, Brendan Gallagher, and Lars Eller will compliment them nicely. There are a few interesting propects in Sven Andrighetto, Tim Bozon, and Michael McCarron. Past that are solid supporting cast members like Brandon Prust but mostly interchangeable parts.

The Adventure Begins:

August 15th, 2013:

The first move I decided to do was cut ties with a bit of dead weight. Robert Mayer (G) and Nick Tarnasky (C) were placed on waivers for the purpose of being bought out.

August 17th, 2013:

In an effort to lower the payroll and upgrade the team, 5 players were put on the trading block. Those are Brian Gionta, Daniel Briere, George Parros, Francis Bouillon, and Travis Moen. For now Douglas Murray is on the injury list so I will deal with him later.

August 29th, 2013:

A blockbuster trade! With an abundance of left wingers in Montreal, one of them had to go. To get a great player though you have to be willing to give back. Chicago was looking to get rid of one of their over priced dmen.

To Chicago:
Tomas Vanek, Brian Gionta, the rights to Daniel Pribyl, the 2015 and 2016 2nd round picks

To Montreal:
Patrick Kane and Michal Rosival

I'm not in the habit of making major trades, at least not this early but I did not think it was an unfair trade in game standards. Star players in the real NHL usually require an established player, a propect, and a high draft pick (1st rounder). I gave Vanek a player near equal value in game, a prospect of decent value, and a couple of good picks. The rest was Gionta for Rosival.

September :

With a month to go before the beginning of the regular season there are still a lot of moves to be made. I am happy enough with my defence which stands as follows since Douglas Murray and Alexei Emelin will both start on injured reserve:

Markov – Subban
Georges – Rosival
Beaulieu – Weaver

This leaves Bouillon to be traded soon.

September 10th, 2013:

George Parros was bought out.

Not Much action this month but the season starts October 1st versus Toronto. I will not go game by game but will give a review of the month and only date the transactions or important events. Maybe great games as well.

October 2013:

The Lineup:

Pacioretty – Desharnais – Kane
Galchenyuk – Plekanec – Gallagher
Bourque – Eller – Briere
Bournival – White – Prust

Markov – Subban
Georges – Rosival
Beaulieu – Weaver

Price
Dubnyk

October was underwhelming as the Habs finished with a 7-5-1 record which was only good enough for 9th in the East. While things started well with two wins to start the season, a 3 game road trip to Western Canada put them under .500 and things were a roller-coaster after that. An injury to Gallagher showed the lack of depth on the right wing which will need to be addressed. Price was not as solid as needed as he posted a 3.00 goals against and a mediocre .904 save percentage.

October 7th:

Three goals in one trade although it ended up costing me. I got rid of some baggage, added some propects, and one is a local boy.

To Philadelphia:
Peter Budaj, Francis Bouillon, and 2016 2nd round pick

To Montreal:
Samuel Morin and Petr Straka

Must be careful as trades are beginning to deplete my draft picks.

October 19th:

Getting one back, although it is in the later rounds.

To Washington:
Travis Moen

To Montreal:
2014 6th round pick

Continuing to build cap room.

October 26th:

Two contract renewals completed! PK Subban signs for 3 more seasons at $4,730,00 per season. Greg Pateryn also signed for 3 more years at $730,000. In other news Andrei Markov announced he will be testing free agency. Look for his name to come up around the deadline.

November 2013:

The Lineup:

Pacioretty – Desharnais – Kane
Galchenyuk – Plekanec – Briere
Bourque – Eller – Prust
Bournival – White – Weise

Markov – Subban
Georges – Rosival
Beaulieu – Weaver

Price
Dubnyk

Overall November showed to be even more distressing as we went 6-6-1 for the month (14-11-2 for the year). The most glaring need this month was for a better backup and that will need to be looked into since I do not like playing a goaltender on back to back nights. Both the goaltending and winger issues will need to be addressed before year's end if we want to start solid in the new year. We have lowered to 10th place in the East and are making our way further and further from the playoff picture.

November 11th:

Dustin Tokarski has been signed to a 2 year 2 way deal. Mike Weaver announced that he will be testing the open market. Lars Eller has stated he is willing to negotiate but will be looking for a deal at over $5,000,000 per season.

December 2013:

The Lineup:

Pacioretty – Desharnais – Kane
Galchenyuk – Plekanec – Gallagher
Bourque – Eller – Andrighetto
Weise – White – Prust

Markov – Subban
Georges – Weaver
Beaulieu – Emelin

Price
Dubnyk

So December got worse! More injuries hit, including our newly acquired backup at some point. We ruined the holiday season with a 5-7-1 record, going to a .500 showing on the season (19-19-3). Some line shuffling will be in order and possibly some more roster tweaking via trade but this team must find solutions as it is heading in the opposite direction it wants to in the standing. With the promising acquisition of Kane this team thought it had the block it was missing.

December 7th:

In an effort to shake things up, trades needed to start happening even if it meant overpaying a little.

To Minnesota:
Devan Dubnyk, Darren Dietz, and the rights to Arturri Lehkonen

To Montreal:
Ilya Bryzgalov

Bryzgalov was the only backup I thought I had the assets to acquire.

December 27th:

It is not the dream winger the team hoped for but a move was done to strengthen the right wing and again shed some unwanted salary.

To Florida:
Douglas Murray and Michal Rosival

To Montreal:
Brad Boyes

I was debating making a move for Huberdeau but debated how legitimate that would be in real life. I may revisit that as the team struggles.

January 2014:

The Lineup:

Pacioretty – Plekanec – Kane
Galchenyuk – Desharnais – Boyes
Bourque – Eller – Gallagher
Weise – White – Prust

Markov – Subban
Georges – Weaver
Beaulieu – Emelin

Price
Bryzgalov

New year, new performance. I wrestled against trading and simply made a couple of modifications to the team internally by switching lines. We went 8-3-2 this month (28-22-5 on the season which has brought us to within a point of 8th place in the East with 1 game in hand over the Rangers. Since joining Boyes has been great with 17 points in 17 games. Bryzgalov has been here and there but I don't need him that much. Changes will still be coming near the deadline with Markov and Weaver set to be unrestricted free agents and Eller asking for too much money.

February 2014:

The Lineup:

Pacioretty – Plekanec – Kane
Galchenyuk – Desharnais – Boyes
Bourque – Eller – Gallagher
Weise – White – Prust

Markov – Subban
Georges – Weaver
Beaulieu – Emelin

Some smart trades and some roster tweaking have turned the plummeting Habs into a promising team. February say more upwards trending with a 6-1-1 record (33-23-6 total). This season the only player I was not able to get rid of was Briere because of his no-movement clause. He may be a buyout candidate. The 6th place Canadiens are not cup contenders but at least we are fighting to stay in the playoff race.

February 4th:

Dale Weise and Ryan White sign 2 year extensions with the Habs.

February 20th:

With the confirmation of looming free-agency, trading Markov was of the utmost importance. Pending restricted free-agent Eller was on the way out as well.

To Winnipeg:
Andrei Markov, Lars Eller, and 2014 6th round pick acquired from Washington

To Montreal:
Zach Bogosian

Winnipeg is currently just on the outside looking in like the Habs. They needed a roster shake-up and were looking to add elements to do that. A replacement for Eller will be needed by deadline.

February 21st:

Solving the missing center issue caused by my last trade.

To Pittsburgh:
Mike Weaver, rights to Josiah Didier, and rights to Brady Vail

To Montreal:
Marcel Goc

Traded one pending free-agent for another. The rights were throw-ins as Goc fills a needed void.

March 2014:

The Lineup:

Pacioretty – Plekanec – Kane
Galchenyuk – Desharnais – Boyes
Bourque – Goc – Gallagher
Weise – White – Prust

Bogosian – Subban
Georges – Emelin
Tinordi – Pateryn

Price
Bryzgalov

The roller-coaster Habs returned in a very challenging March as all middle of the pack teams fought hard for the last playoff spots. Montreal are still in a okay spot with a tenuous hold on the 6th place in the East but will need a better finish than the 7-8-0 result they had in March (40-31-6 total). With 5 games to go it'll be make or break.

With not the most memorable finish April saw a 3-2-1 record which was good enough for us to qualify for the playoffs (42-33-7 total) in 8th place of the East. It was not the season to be most proud of and there will be some off season question marks to deal with.

It was not surprising to see us eliminated by Boston. What was surprising to me was that we actually put up a semblance of a fight as we were beaten 4 games to 2. This elimination has shown to me that if we want to compete we will require more aggressive players willing to put others down. See you all at the draft.

Overall I am very happy with my draft. I feel that I have acquired a great mix of players and added some much needed size overall. There are no future Wayne Gretzkys but there is at least a few solid 2nd and 3rd liners in there.

Summer 2014:

June 30th:

Marcel Goc re-signs with Montreal for 3 seasons at $1,800,000 per season.

July 1st:

Montreal signs Paul Stastny to a 5 year deal at over $6.8M. It is rumored to contain a no-movement clause.

July 6th:

Three contract extensions were signed. Galchenyuk signed for 5 years at $2,960,000. Gallagher signed for 3 seasons at $2,750,000. Beaulieu will make $1,010,000 per year for 3 years. Patrick Kane announced he would not be re-signing with the Habs after this season.

July 9th:

While not a splash, the Habs addressed some needs today by adding a backup and a young dman of size. Andres Lindback was signed for 2 years at $730,437 per season. Large format defenseman Simon Despres signed on for 3 seasons at $704,956 each year.

July 10th:

The Habs sign Sami Vatanen to a 3 year deal at $550,000 per.

July 20th:

Montreal makes the headlines across the NHL with a huge trade! Instead of waiting until the trade deadline to address what to do with impending free agent Patrick Kane who declared he would not be re-signing with the Habs, they dealt him in a hug multi-player deal that brings some local flavor to the team.

To Florida:
Patrick Kane, David Desharnais, the rights to Colin Sullivan, and a 6th round pick in 2017

To Montreal:
David Perron and Jonathan Huberdeau

Overall I think this is a very fair trade as Perron only has one more year left on his deal and Huberdeau is restricted after this year. Kane and Desharnais have high value especially if Kane can be re-signed.

July 21st:

Extensions to announce! Huberdeau, seemingly pleased with his coming to Montreal, signed on for 4 more seasons at $2,530,000 per year. Tinordi will make $880,000 a year for the next 3. Bournival signed an expensive extension at $2,320,000 a year for 4 years. Magnus Nygren will be at an affordable $1,020,000 for 3 seasons.

August 2nd:

Depth move as Montreal signs Landon Ferraro to a two year, two way deal at $550,000 per.

August 3rd:

Hamilton will continue getting stronger as the Habs signed young players Richard Panik and Tyler Pitlick to 3 year deals at $550,000 per seasons.

August 17th:

Gabriel Dumont signs a 3 year extension.

September 22nd:

One last roster tweak before the season starts.

To Anaheim:
Rene Bourque

To Montreal:
2015 3rd round pick

Getting over 3 million dollars off the books is already a treat, to be able to get a nice pick on top of that is a great thing.

Season preview:

After the nail biting and grey hair caused by how painful last season was this team needed to take a few steps in the right direction. Sadly the team overall does not seem all that much more impressive than last year. We have decent depth but we had to make a decision on Kane and that meant losing out on an elite player. If Price improves and the younger players continue to develop then we will have a chance at the playoffs again. I have managed to shed all the salary I wanted except for Briere, who will be the most expensive 4th liner in the league but will walk after the season.

October 2014:

The Lineup:

Galchenyuk – Stastny – Perron
Pacioretty – Plekanec – Boyes
Huberdeau – Goc – Gallagher
Weise – White – Briere

Bogosian – Subban
Georges – Emelin
Beaulieu – Tinordi

Price
Lindback

As expected October was a bust as the team went 6-7-0. We have struggled offensively and defensively. There have been no positives to this month except to say that we actually won as many games as we did. Not much is currently in the works to improve on this and currently I refuse to blow up the future of the team to barely break even.

To say that we played better is laughable but sadly true. With our record of 6-6-2 were were a .500 team but not overall on the season with 12-13-2 to show for it. Next month will need to see a couple of trades as we seek to strengthen the core of the team. Also our defence will need to be bosltered. The season is still young.

December saw a bit of life from this team. We went 9-5-0 which is a definite improvement. On the season we are finally on the right side of .500 with a record of 21-18-2. A major trade did right the ship as we added some much needed muscle. Our defence still struggles but a trade is in the works to improve that.

December 6th:

When you get tired of playing against the devil, have him join your team.

To Boston:
Tomas Plekanec, Max Pacioretty, Brendan Gallagher, and 2016 6th round pick.

To Montreal:
Patrice Bergeron and Milan Lucic

Lucic was on the trading block and we needed a big able body making this trade very interesting. I supplied very valuable players so I could also add Bergeron.

I'm not sure what's more funny - Lucic wearing a Habs jersey or Pacioretty wearing a Bruins jersey!

Yeah it was epically funny to me too. Sadly my PC crashed and I had to reformat so this game is gone. I'm going to restart a new one. Not sure which team I'll go for though. Thinking of saving Edmonton.

Given some of your trades, I felt you had already gutted the team a bit
