[dynasty] rebuilding the sabres

BUFFALO SABRES REBUILD

As a new player of the game (just found out about it two weeks ago) I found these message boards and took a great interest in the Sabres rebuild that u/TEHLUDDITE posted awhile back. The user hasn't posted since June last year, so I thought I'd start up a new Sabres rebuild franchise with sort of a different strategy. Like I said, I am new to this sort of thing so if there are any suggestions you have for me or other things you would like to know as I sim month by month, please don't hesitate to post it here. Constructive criticism is always welcome.

With that out of the way, I should begin by saying I used the March 5th rosters just like u/TEHLUDDITE did, so much of the disassembling of the main roster from 13-14 was done before I took over. Thus, I have a pretty decent 2014 and 2015 draft stock already in place with two first rounders in each of those years. The difference between mine and u/TEHLUDDITE's strategy is that I was more interested in building the team for the future by trading some more pieces I didn't see fitting the puzzle right now and receiving some pieces that I felt could help somewhat right away.

With a pretty decent draft class coming in 2014, I didn't want to be too good this season. However, already having the NY Islanders' first rounder and with them being pretty bad in the first year in previous sims I did, I sort of banked on them being pretty bad in this sim as well for at least a top five pick. With my strategy in place, I figured my first round pick would fall somewhere between tenth and fourteenth overall.

THE OFFSEASON MOVES

I am aware that some of the moves I made may not seem like moves real-life GM's would make, but I didn't feel they were too farfetched either. I know that the AI is a little off as far as overvaluing draft picks and I may have taken advantage of that a little bit. But after seeing how lopsided some deals that the computer GM's made over the course of previous sims, I didn't really care too much as the majority of my big returns were for rights of KHL players that weren't signable at the moment anyway. Most of the veteran contracted players I received in return have expiring contracts and don't really have any purpose on this team other than depth for this season. My main concern as far as the roster I already had goes, was locking up Tyler Ennis and Marcus Foligno to extensions so they don't try to bolt in the offseason as they did in u/TEHLUDDITE's sim.

8/19/13 - Traded C Bryan Flynn, RD Henrik Tallinder, LW Matt Ellis, LD Drew Bagnall, a 2015 7th round pick (BUF) and a 2016 7th round pick (BUF) to Florida in exchange for C Aleksander Barkov, LD Ryan Whitney, LW Mark Mancari and RD Matt Gilroy. Signed RW Tyler Ennis to a 3-year/$4.35 mil contract extension. Signed LW Marcus Foligno to a 3-year/$2.35 mil contract extension.

This was the main trade that I figured all of you FHM purists would scoff at seeing as Barkov is the main piece, a former second overall pick that I gave up pretty much nothing for. Truth is, I don't see Cody Hodgson on this team past 2015 as I don't like his contract and I wanted a true number one center. Hopefully Barkov turns out to be just that. I was also successful at extending Ennis and Foligno which I'm very happy about.

8/21/13 - Traded RD Mike Weber, C Tim Schaller, C Kevin Sundher, C Phil Varone and a 2014 7th round pick (BUF) to Chicago in exchange for RW Ryan Hartman, C Peter Regin, LW Pierre-Marc Bouchard and rights to C Teuvo Teravainen, LD Carl Dahlstrom and RW Kevin Hayes.

Mike Weber wasn't a d-man that I saw as part of the rebuilding process, but thought he had the most value as a moveable piece to a team who was weak at RD (supposedly). As a Hawks fan in real life, I know that they have been weak at the center position as far as depth goes so I sent them three center prospects and a pick in order to get some more winger prospects in Hartman and Hayes, and some unsignable overseas lottery tickets in Teravainen and Dahlstrom.

8/22/13 - Claimed RD David Rundblad off waivers from Chicago. Placed LW Mark Mancari and RD Matt Gilroy on waivers.

This was a pleasant surprise seeing as the Hawks supposedly had a weakness at RD and for some reason put Rundblad on waivers. I am hoping he turns out to be a nice rebuilding piece, if not for the actual competing team down the road then as a decent trade chip as he has a 7.5a potential.

8/24/13 - Traded C Daniel Catenacci, G Nathan Lieuwen, G Connor Knapp, rights to C Colin Jacobs, C Cedrick Henley, C Eric Locke, a 2015 6th round pick (BUF) and a 2016 6th round pick (BUF) to Tampa Bay in exchange for C Vladislav Namestnikov, G Kristers Gudlevskis, G Riku Helenius, rights to G Andrei Vasilevski, LW Nikita Gusev, LW Adam Erne and RD Dylan Blujus.

This was one of my big trades for not only solid goaltending depth for this year but another overseas lottery ticket at the position for the future. Signing Vasilevski is not possible at the moment due to being under a KHL contract.

8/26/13 - Traded LW Matt D'Agostini, C Zenon Konopka, RW Patrick Kaleta, RD Chad Ruhwedel, rights to C Logan Nelson, C Steven Shipley, RW Judd Peterson, a 2015 5th round pick (BUF) and a 2016 5th round pick (BUF) to Washington in exchange for RD Dmitry Orlov, C Eric Fehr, LW Dustin Penner and rights to RW Evgeny Kuznetsov. Placed LD Ryan Whitney on waivers.

Another one of my "picks-for-rights" moves, this one coming at the cost of two fifth round picks and rights to a solid center prospect in Nelson. The rest was for depth, and for the sake of fantasy I felt that the possibility of Orlov and Zadorov on the team next year may be of some help to getting Kuznetsov to sign here. That obviously remains to be seen.

8/31/13 - Signed RD Dylan Blujus to a 3-year/$550k entry-level contract.

9/2/13 - Claimed RW Alex Chiasson off waivers from Dallas. Placed C Peter Regin on waivers. Placed LW Marcus Foligno on IR.

9/13/13 - Traded C Luke Adam and a 2014 5th round pick (BUF) to Philadelphia in exchange for LD Samuel Morin. Placed RW John Scott on waivers.

Luke Adam was nothing more than depth for me, that I was planning to replace with the newly-acquired Namestnikov anyway. The former second round pick Adam had decent value and an expiring contract so I moved him and a late round pick for a solid defense prospect in Morin. Morin is a big part of my rebuilding plans.

THE PROSPECTS

I already had a decent prospect corps before I took over, led by 19-year old winger Zemgus Girgensons. Knowing that if I sent him down he would probably be unhappy, I decided to keep him on the NHL roster and make him a top-six forward right away with hopes that he would develop quickly on a line with playmaker Cody Hodgson and power-forward Chris Stewart.

In the AHL, the only prospects I have at Rochester that I feel are going to be integral parts of the rebuild are 19-year old defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen and 20-year old winger Joel Armia. 21-year old center Johan Larsson could be a solid piece as well. I brought in goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis to shore up a depth weakness should there be an injury or either Jhonas Enroth or Michal Neuvirth prove ineffective. Should either of them be deemed not a part of the future (which they probably won't be), Gudlevskis projects as a pretty serviceable backup. I also brought in previously mentioned Vladislav Namestnikov for depth at center, but the former Tampa Bay first round pick could snag an NHL job next year if he performs well in Rochester.

At the junior level, I have a lot of stock in defense led by Nikita Zadorov and the newly-acquired Samuel Morin. They both project to be in my top-four d-men corps as early as next year. On offense, I have center Mikhail Grigorenko and winger William Carrier that I am expecting to have big seasons in the QMJHL and hopefully crack the NHL roster next season as well.

On the college/USHL level, I am looking forward to the hopeful progression of wingers J.T. Compher and Hudson Fasching, as well as defenseman Jake McCabe. All of which are projected to have an impact at the NHL level in a couple of years.

Overseas, as previously stated, I traded away a lot of my late picks over the next three draft years in order to acquire rights to some big prospects currently in the KHL, including winger Evgeny Kuznetsov and goaltender Andrei Vasilevski. Signability will hinge on whether or not the re-up with their respective KHL clubs, but I am hoping I can pry away at least one of them next offseason, especially Vasilevski as I have a weakness at the position. If I am not able to get him to come to North America, goaltender will be a big concern that will have to be addressed at the draft with Thatcher Demko and Ville Husso at the top of my board. I also acquired the rights to Finnish center Teuvo Teravainen who is playing in the SML and not considering overseas offers at the moment. Some other overseas prospects to note are goaltender Linus Ullmark and winger Gustav Possler of the SHL, as well as defenseman Carl Dahlstrom of the Swedish junior-20 team.

As far as my depth chart goes, I only included players that are either part of the rebuild or depth for this year. I do have some players under contract/have rights for that I did not include, seeing as most of them will be gone by next season anyway. I just didn't want to clog up my depth chart with junk.

I will post the progress month-by-month as I sim through the season and write up a report on each month. As soon as I am done with October 1st- November 1st I will post the results. Stay tuned, and thanks for reading!

Oct 1st-Nov 1st

Oct 1st-Nov 1st

Record: 9-5-1, 19 pts, t-1st Eastern Conference (with Pittsburgh)

TRANSACTIONS

10/1/13 - Activated LW Marcus Foligno from IR.

10/6/13 - Placed LW Ville Leino on IR.

10/8/13 - Placed C Torrey Mitchell on IR.

10/11/13 - Placed RD Mark Pysyk on IR.

10/27/13 - Recalled RW John Scott from Rochester (AHL).

10/31/13 - Activated C Torrey Mitchell and LW Ville Leino from IR. Placed RW John Scott on waivers.

Not much to report here except for some injuries. John Scott (obviously) cleared waivers and was sent back down to Rochester. Given his ability to play both wings and on defense, he should be my swing man most of the season when these injuries to the main roster occur.

BREAKDOWN

The first month was a bit of a surprise to say the least. While I made many moves to improve the team for the future, I did not expect immediate early success. The team was bit by the injury bug early, as we saw Torrey Mitchell, Ville Leino and Mark Pysyk all go down with injuries. Those who filled in, however, contributed greatly. Pierre-Marc Bouchard, who I had actually attempted to put through waivers before realizing that he had a no-movement clause in his contract, turned in a great October. Winning half of his faceoffs and contributing two goals and seven points from the fourth line, he seems to have taken Torrey Mitchell's job for the time being. Before the season started, the only real competition on the team for playing time was at the goaltender position between Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth. After splitting the first ten starts 50/50, Enroth ran away with the starting job posting a 7-2-1 record to go along with a 2.67 GAA and .911 SV%. Neuvirth, on the other hand, struggled greatly going 2-3-0 with a 3.80 GAA and .886 SV%. Tyler Ennis proved worthy of his contract extension early, posting a 3-10-13 line with 6 PPP in 14 games. Zemgus Girgensons also thrived in his top-six role turning in a 3-8-11 line with 6 PPP and a plus-2 rating.

On the other hand, my top defensive pairing of Tyler Myers and Christian Ehrhoff seemed to have trouble gelling as Myers only had a goal and four points with a minus-9 rating in his first 15 games, while Ehrhoff turned in only four assists and a minus-7 rating. Another disappointment was Marcus Foligno who seems to still have some lingering effects from his injury as he only had one assist in 11 games with a minus-6 rating.

Going forward into November, I have decided to not shuffle the lines as my top-six forwards seem to be clicking and I don't want to hinder their success. If my top defensive pairing continues its' struggles I will cut their ice time a bit, but I fully expect them to pick it up especially on the powerplay. Screenshots of full stats have been posted below, next month's update post should come sometime later today, and I will include an "On the Farm" report as well. Thanks again for reading!

I'm doing a Sabres replay too....but I've stopped for a while....and seeing your transactions...it brings up the biggest issue I've run into with this game...

Why is Alex Chiasson being waived?

There is no way that should happen...I'm sure it's salary cap issues but something is not right then with fundamental engine of the game.

I picked up Gustav Nyquist on waivers from Detroit...they had also waived Datsyuk and a host of others....

so clearly something is not working right...in my opinion.

I agree. I did an Oilers rebuild a couple weeks ago and the Hurricanes put Eric and Jordan Staal as well as Jeff Skinner on waivers after the first season...

You think that's bad? Pittsburgh put Malkin on waivers in my Calgary franchise, total game breaker. I haven't played that one since.

Nov 1st-Dec 1st

Nov 1st-Dec 1st

Record: 5-7-1, 11 pts (14-12-2 Overall, 30 pts, 6th Eastern Conference)

TRANSACTIONS

11/2/13 - Placed LW Zemgus Girgensons on IR.

11/8/13 - Activated RD Mark Pysyk from IR.

11/24/13 - Activated LW Zemgus Girgensons from IR.

11/27/13 - Placed LD Jamie McBain on IR.

Just more injuries to report on the transactions front this month. Lost Girgensons for a couple of weeks which hurt my powerplay a bit. Also saw McBain go down toward the end of the month and I'll be without his services for about three weeks. I also put Myers, Ehrhoff, Leino, Mitchell and Neuvirth on the trade list to see if I get any bites over the next month.

BREAKDOWN

Well, seems like my team came back down to Earth a little bit. Despite the record, there were many good things to take away from this month. Tyler Ennis continued his hot streak potting seven goals in November. Alex Chiasson also took advantage of his rise in minutes following the Girgensons injury, posting eleven points in 16 games. Ehrhoff and Myers continued their struggles which led to a decrease in minutes and a demotion to the third pairing, until the McBain injury which forced me to put Myers back up on top. I'm hoping he picks it up now that he's no longer with Ehrhoff. Marcus Foligno also continued to disappoint, but it seems he decided he wants to play lately posting four points in his last five games, so maybe there is some hope going into December that he'll turn it around.

Ice time has changed a little bit, but I decided to keep rolling out virtually the same lines since scoring hasn't been much of an issue so far. I will monitor the Myers/Ehrhoff situation closely, and am very interested in moving Ehrhoff sooner than later. I doubt anyone will want Leino given his gargantuan contract, but I will attempt to trade him at some point regardless.

PROSPECT WATCH

GOALTENDING
Kristers Gudlevskis has put up an outstanding 10-2-1 record at Rochester sporting a 1.82 GAA and .941 SV%. He will definitely make his way up to the NHL team if he keeps this up. His counterpart in net Riku Helenius has also performed well in the six games he has played in, turning in a 4-1-1 record with a 1.60 GAA and .947 SV%. Overseas, Andrei Vasilevski is tearing it up in the KHL turning in a 20-7-1 line with a 2.08 GAA and .925 SV% in 28 games. Linus Ullmark, the seemingly forgotton prospect, is having an excellent season so far in the SHL with a 7-4-0 record to go along with a 1.91 GAA and .933 SV% in 11 games. Things are looking good all of a sudden in net.

DEFENSE
Nikita Zadorov has been a shining star on the blue line for London in the OHL, posting a 2-11-13 line in 16 games with a plus-13 rating since returning from an offseason injury. Dylan Blujus is putting up decent numbers as well, with a 2-13-15 line to go along with 16 PIM and a minus-2 rating in 28 games for North Bay. In the Q, Samuel Morin has got off to a somewhat slow start, with a 4-8-12 line and minus-4 rating in 29 games for Rimouski. Given he is more of a defensive-minded defenseman, I'm not too concerned about his point production, but rather his plus-minus I would like to see improve drastically. It is a high offense league, so I'm not really worried about it at the moment. Rasmus Ristolainen hasn't been producing like I would like him too so far in the AHL, with only a goal and five points in 18 games for Rochester. I will monitor that situation closely, but again, not really too worried about it yet. He is still a plus-2 on the ice.

FORWARDS
My brightest star so far has definitely been center Mikhail Grigorenko of Quebec, potting 22 goals and 33 points through 27 games in the Q. Fellow former first round pick Joel Armia is also having a solid start in the AHL, putting up eight goals and 13 points, sporting a plus-4 rating through 15 games. Ryan Hartman has been quite the agitator so far for Plymouth in the OHL, recording 51 PIM to go along with 15 goals and 27 points in 26 games. That's looking to be a great acquistion so far. William Carrier has been a helper machine for Cape Breton, with 25 assists and 38 points through 29 games. The future is bright on offense, here's to hoping they continue to tear it up.

Dec 1st-Jan 1st update coming soon! Thanks for reading, and don't hesitate to leave any feedback you may have!

Dec 1st-Feb 1st

It was a really boring month in December, nothing but some minor injuries and no real moves to report on. So I decided to go ahead and sim January too so I can have some more stuff to write about. And boy did I have a lot of activity to report on...

Dec 1st-Feb 1st

Record: 8-12-6 (22-24-8 Overall, 56 pts, 13th Eastern Conference

TRANSACTIONS

NO DECEMBER TRANSACTIONS

1/6/14 - Traded C Cody Hodgson, RD Christian Ehrhoff, LD Jamie McBain, C Torrey Mitchell, rights to LW Nikita Gusev, and a 2016 4th round pick (BUF) to Nashville in exchange for LD Michael Del Zotto, LD Seth Jones, C Filip Forsberg and RW Colton Sissons. Placed LD Tyler Myers, RW Chris Stewart and LW Ville Leino on IR. Recalled C Vladislav Namestnikov and LD Rostislav Klesla from Rochester (AHL).

So this was a big trade I made as a result of trying to find a taker for Ehrhoff's contract and I targeted Nashville because of their weakness at center. I wanted to weaken my team a little bit because I don't really want them to make the playoffs this year as I don't think they'll be an actual cup contender. Not that I needed the cap relief, I just wanted to get rid of some guys with a lot of years on their contracts that I didn't see as part of my puzzle. Jones and Forsberg fit the mold, and Sissons is on the big league team after performing well for Nashville's AHL affiliate in Milwaukee. Klesla was recalled to keep my team above the cap floor. Of course the day before this trade happened three of my big contracts go down with injuries, so I needed to search to make another move for depth.

1/14/14 - Placed LD Alexander Sulzer on IR. Signed LD Michael Del Zotto to a 3-year/$5 mil contract extension. Signed RD Dmitry Orlov to a 3-year/$950k contract extension.

Del Zotto was extended (and overpaid, even though I only just met his demands) because I feel like next years' club may run into problems staying above the floor with all of the rookie contracts I'll have on the team next season. I'm not sure if he will actually be a part of the competing team I am assembling, but that contract and the fact that he's an 8.0a potential shouldn't be too hard to move if I feel like I have to down the road. I also lost Sulzer for a few weeks, just another case of injuries coming in clusters.

1/18/14 - Traded G Michal Neuvirth, C Pierre-Marc Bouchard, LW Mark Mancari and rights to RW Gustav Possler to Montreal in exchange for G Devan Dubnyk, RW Danny Briere and RW Michael McCarron.

I made this move to not only get rid of the extra year on Neuvirth's contract which was useless to me, but to get a better NHL-caliber back up in Dubnyk who had put together a solid season as Price's backup in Montreal to this point. Briere had spent all season at Montreal's AHL affiliate in Hamilton, and had a decent cap hit for this year and next, so I thought being reunited with Buffalo would be a nice fit for him while helping me stay above the floor.

1/29/14 - Placed RW Cory Conacher on waivers. Claimed by the NY Islanders.

Didn't really care too much about losing Conacher other than for depth reasons as for some reason my team is getting injured every other game it seems. I'm not sure if there's something I'm doing wrong or not checking out personnel-wise, so if anyone has any suggestions regarding this matter please feel free to share.

1/31/14 - Activated RW Chris Stewart and LW Ville Leino from IR. Placed LW Drew Stafford on IR.

Gained back two forwards that I badly needed both cap-wise and for veteran talent on this really young team now. But, of course, lost Stafford for a few weeks during practice.

BREAKDOWN

Changes, changes, changes. Out with the old and in with the new. I desperately wanted to get as much as I could by dealing Ehrhoff before his potential went down, and I figured packaging him with Hodgson would yield me a great return package. I feel like the move I made with Nashville may be a little sided in my favor, but Nashville would have made that move without the pick so I threw that in there to make it seem a little more fair. As far as performance goes, we did in fact see the team slip a little bit, falling back to 16th in the conference. Stats are posted below. The lines and pairings I obviously had to change up a bit because of the trades, and how that works out will be shown more in the next month. I will post my final "Prospect Watch" following March going into the playoffs. Thanks for reading!

Haha I know! He had two goals in his first three games and I just about lost it! But as you can see, he's only potted three more and those all came in the first 16 games he played. Only four assists since, back to the good ol' Ville we all know (and hate). I'll probably buy him out if I can't find some drunk GM to take him in the offseason. But for now due to cap floor issues, he actually has a use on the team: being overpaid.

I know. I am aware that these deals would never, ever happen in real life. But I did them anyway just to show the flaws in the trade AI should any programmers look at this for research purposes. I'm sure they're well documented by now anyway. To be honest though, through 16 games since the trade with Nashville, Hodgson and Ehrhoff are on fire with their new club averaging a point per game. Del Zotto has only given me two assists through 11 games and Sissons has been the most productive player from my returns which is not what I anticipated. Jones and Forsberg have been pretty much non-existent offensively but I'm sure through their progression into next season and 2015-16 is where I'll see dividends making this trade more lopsided than it is at the moment.

Really like the trade to acquire Forsberg. Keep on rolling.

I enjoy reading you, keep up the good work ...
.... and i agree with others and you regarding the trades, something is just not right but hey that's how the game works as for now so .... (as the GM for Montréal i reunited the Subban family and i know the bruins would never trade Malcolm Subban for the garbage i managed to give them ^^)

Does anyone know if there's anyway to reduce the amount of injuries that occur in this game? Because I've been having so many that it's honestly making this game not fun and almost unplayable. It's got to the point where every game I have simmed after the trade deadline I suffer an injury. I have six players on IR and two more with minor but unplayable injuries. Really, really pissing me off.
