Just keep looking at the bright side.
The OOTP Forums are back. And they don't have an English accent.

Well the main problem has been that the database dump created by the backup software has been incomplete. Just in the middle of the file, after the "create table 'post'..." statement, the file ended. So all the posts would been gone, but also the other tables that follow the post table, and also all our internal data. The latest complete backup has been a July backup
![]() I know that this really sucks. Please accept my *sincere* apologies! Especially Chris and all the others, who really put a lot of work into this forum! You can believe me that nobody has been shocked more than I when I saw that the database would not restore. We here have lost a lot of data, too. The brand new OOTP 2006 thread is gone, all the Title Bout 2 tipps & tricks, several tables containing internal data... all gone. Well I've learned my lesson. I will now monthly restore the backup on the other server and look whether it works. Having a backup is just not worth anything when it's uncomplete or damaged... Who restores his backup frequently just to see whether it works? Well, I will start to do it... We'll work out a plan now to prevent that this happens again. I'll keep you posted about changes in the backup concept, because I know that you need to trust us to put so much work into this forum.

Thanks for posting Andreas. I appreciate your willingness to stick your head up as I am sure that this has been a rough couple of days for you. People are going to be mad (me included) but keep us informed and I am sure all will be back to normal in short order.
By the way, it's incomplete. (Damn Germans )

Yes, I am fully aware that I should have backed up everything I've written in The Base Ball Life of Patrick O'Farrell and The Keystone League. If I had, then it would simply be a matter of reposting everything I'd added since mid-July.
Unfortunately, I didn't plan ahead that well. In Pat O'Farrell's world, I lost the end of the 1930 season, all of 1931, and most of 1932. Half the Keystone League's history is gone. End of story.

I wouldn't be so quick as to blame the OOTP folks for this decision. You'd be surprised just how common this configuration is in the hosting world. There are hosting companies out there that backup their SHARED servers to the single live HD. Personally, I lay more of the blame on the data center that's providing their hosting. They should have been smart enough to suggest at least a 2nd hard drive dedicated to backups for this machine. I still don't think they needed to go as far as having a redundant server, as they have better things to spend their money on. But, a 2nd hard drive is an in-expensive way to reduce the risk of data loss to something physically happening to the data center.

Still, I think the OOTP folks DO need to be blamed. It's their company, their Web site, their responsibility to handle it correctly. You've explained the redundant server issue elsewhere, and I can understand that better now. But if these guys are professionals, shouldn't THEY have researched a 2nd hard drive dedicated to backups, rather than waiting for someone else to suggest it TO them? That other companies make the same mistake does not mean OOTP didn't make it, too, or that those most affected don't have a right to be pretty upset right now. Appreciate the explanation (in both posts )GH |

I can't believe that all this valuable information wasn't backed up on to tape and stored underground in case of a nuclear attack. How could the cornerstone of our civilization be left so vulnerable? I sure hope they didn't lose the list of banned users - Oakjefferson could be here right now.

I lost over 13 seasons from my main dynasty and my entire 2nd dynasty. Probably over 75 hours of typing. They're basically dead.
Are you sure you guys don't work for the Bush administration? Brownie, is that you????

I'm upset that I lost....nothing of consequence!
That's flippant, I know, people did lose things they put a lot of work in to and if that had been me I would be pretty upset.

I guess I should've backed up my dynasty better. It, too, is now effectively dead - I'm certainly not going to try to recreate two seasons of writing and such. My sympathies go out to dynasty writers who lost much more work than I did.
