I find it funny actually. Lately I've heard europeans using "soccer" more, and heard folks over here in the US and Canada using "football" more often.

Slightly related: To prove how pointless copy protection is, FM 2008 is already cracked and online, two days before it's official release date.

Thanks to all who took the time to drop in your thoughts .

From the good things I have heard about the game (from Americans), I thought this would be the case with some people.

The first SI game I bought was EHM. I chose it over FM because I knew nothing about soccer and already liked hockey. My thinking was it would be like getting FM but in a sport I knew something about. This held true to a point but EHM while impressively deep is not as deep as FM, which is to be expected as it's latest release is only version three. I find it to be an enjoyable game and it also taught me how an SI interface works as it is very similar to FM's GUI. Keep in mind if you go the EHM route that the game has been discontinued due to poor sales so there will be no EHM 2008.

I then decided it was time to try FM\WWSM and bought WWSM 2006 on disk at a Gamestop (current versions on disk now only available from Amazon or as digital download). I knew nothing about football (the game will make you quit calling it soccer) and was totally lost and thought I had made a mistake buying the game. I could see the immense depth of the game though and so made a real effort to learn the things I needed to know to play the game.

It took me about three months to learn about football, both the tactics in game and how the front office works. In football you don't trade players you buy them, generally from lower level clubs that is how they make money. Clubs are promoted\relegated from leagues. I spent some time reading the tactics threads at SI forums (if you buy the game look for tactics threads from a guy called wwfan) they taught me about how real football is played and how that is translated into WWSM.

Guys on the SI forum were very helpful if I had questions along with the FOFC
board members that play FM (there are quite a few). FOFC always has a good thread going about FM with lots of guys that are willing to help. Marc Vaughn, one of the lead developers of FM also spends some time there and helps out newbies with suggestions.

WWSM had turned me into a guy that I never thought would care about football to a guy that now really enjoys watching a match. If I had the fox soccer channel and could see games every weekend I could see myself becoming very involved in the English Premier League. I just got dishnetwork so may have to check into getting that added to my package (the wife will love that ).

As other have said try the demo. At first, since you know nothing about football, it may seem overwhelming. I know it did to me. Stick with it though and it becomes very rewarding.
Thanks Sweed. Alot of writing - probably took you some time to put that together. I appreciate it.

Actually your starting point was identical to my line of thinking. Also, there appear to be some useful tips for educating myself in your post as well. This post (as well as others) seem to point that my suspicions were correct; and that the game can be enjoyable to someone who knows nothing of soccer ...errrr football (gulp - with American football being my favorite sport - that may be very difficult for me to ever really say lol).

I agree ... Matter of fact, this is precisely the line of thought that led me to thinking I may enjoy the game.

Thanks again everyone.

If you give FM the investment of your time, you will find yourself playing the greatest "sim" that has ever graced the gaming industry.

From one american who new nothing about the beautiful game to another I will tell you it is will take much of your precious computer time to learn. But little by little FM will suck you in. You will discover little things that perhaps the first 5 minutes you sit down make no sense. You will then refer to the manual click around and BAM!! FM seeps into your blood.

Much like Sweed, it was 4 years ago this November that I took my first sweet hit of this thing we call FM (CM) and I now watch more "soccer" then any other sport (and play FM till my fingers bleed or one of my 5 kids begs me to pay attention to them).

I personally thank SI for making a great game but I thank them even more for turning me onto the greatest sport that God has ever inspired man to play.

Take the dive and invest you will thank SI later...EHM is also a great game. Not to the same degree as FM but it was well on its way.

Skycat to return sometime in 2008.....Now back to being a know it all in my other world of American Football, politics and other stupid stuff that makes me feel important and cool.

It certainly is the greatest sim. Just wish they hadn't hopped on the EA Sports yearly release bandwagon.

As a compromise, I think we English football fans will generally prefer 'futbol' from an American than soccer, if you need to differentiate from that game with all the padding. The word soccer just sits wrong with many English fans.

Wow did SI screw it up big time with their new "piracy" measures. They screwed over legitimate customers with it. I really don't like the attitude over there. Good thing they are done here.

I'd hold off on FM 2008 at least until the first patch is released.

Not checked what the FM2008 issues are, but if it's anything like the Sims 2 debacle with EA, the party line seems to be to plug their ears and say "I AM NOT LISTENING LA LA LA" in regards to copy protection issues. (And since both use Securom I would assume it IS the same issues.)

I don't honestly understand why they bother anymore. Wish more companies would take Stardock's lead and just do away with the copy protection entirely and treat their customers like customers rather than thieves. (I would never have supported Stardock as much as I have were it not for their enlightened attitude.) I mean protection clearly doesn't work AT ALL. They claim it stops casual copying. Well nobody I know, since the late 90's, has even bothered with casual copying. They want to pirate something, they will, off the net. So what other excuse is there to continue this nonsense? It's all BS. They put protection on the disks to prevent copying... But you can't return to the game to the store for a refund if it doesn't work (probably because of said copy protection) because you may have copied it...

Given the system issues I've been reading about in regards to Securom 7 etc... I'm not touching FM2008 with a ten foot pole. Life is too short to continue to give my money to software companies that treat every legitimate customer like a criminal, especially when that protection impacts the system in a variety of harmful ways. Every layer of crap they add with this utterly futile protection (and believe me, it IS futile) is one more thing to go wrong. And again, the game is cracked and out there before release day, so as always it's only hurting the legitimate consumers, and I'm completely sick of clueless companies continuing this asinine business model of treating the very people who keep them in business like the scum of the earth.

Sports Interactive joins the list of software companies whose products I will no longer purchase.

I get what you're saying, but I think it's a shame to give up on a game as good as FM. It does seem that software companies' legitimate customers are hurt more by these measures than the actual software pirates.

Also, Stardock is awesome and Galactic Civ II is the best space 4x game ever. I'm looking forward to the new expansion.

I have not paid Securom the least attention until reading this. It is amusing to see the first Google search for the technology leading to the company, and then the next 496,999 sites subverting it.
