Yahoo search
When I search for “Computer Baseball Game”, OOTP does not pop up on the first page. I had done this search for years and finally discovered OOTP from someone referring to it on the Baseball Mogul forum. I demoed OOTP8, bought 9 and 10, and pre-ordered 11.
I know nothing of how websites work, so my question is, can the OOTP site be made to pop up on the first page when the search, as stated, is made? I know it comes up on the first page when “Computer Baseball Sim” is searched but I can’t be the only one that searched Game instead of Sim. It is in my own interest that I bring this up. The way I figure it, the more new customers that purchase this game the better chance I have of getting what I want this game to be. With an April release (hope it’s before the second week of MLB baseball season) the more people who discover this game the better. |

Its not usually about money, although their are paid placement that could get you to the top. Each search engine uses different criteria, but since they crawl the web it is about things like keywords, links, content on the pages, etc, so it is more about web page design.

Different search engines do have their own varying techniques, but typically SEO is primarily about getting other sites to link to yours. Yahoo even lists that first in their SEO tips page. Considering how many online leagues web reports link to OOTP, however, you'd think that wouldn't be a problem, but I wonder if Yahoo considers them spam since the pages are so similar and that's one way search engines fight link spammers. So it might still help OOTP to get more different sites, especially fairly popular sites, to link to them.
That same tips page does point out some specific things OOTP could do that it doesn't appear to be doing. For example, I couldn't find OOTP's main page in Yahoo's "directory", only the special address for OOTP2006, but since that page is long dead it's not helping. Certainly a search for "out of the park baseball" in yahoo's directory should result in OOTP's main page to pop up first, but it's nowhere to be found and according to yahoo themselves directory results are important to its regular search results. Thanks for pointing this out. I'll make sure someone sees it. I imagine Google is so popular now that not many pay attention to results from other engines (I don't), but Yahoo is still probably one that we should pay at least some attention to.

Actually, we've been doing a lot of search engine optimization, and OOTP is climbing up the list of many key phrases. For example, if you Google "baseball simulation," we're the third hit, whereas last year we weren't even on the first page! We're the first hit for "baseball simulation PC," and so on. Due to the lack of competition, many searches that include "Mac" or "Linux" show us near the top, too.
A lot of it has to do with which major sites link to yours, and as someone mentioned, how much you spend in advertising!

I curse the day that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix came out. But whatever you are doing is working, because now an 'ootp' search comes up with Out of the Park links on top.
