Hammering Hank, maybe not so much

I started a sim in 1903, planning to take over the worst team in either league in 1968. It has been interesting seeing how the big names did. Some over performed, some under performed but poor Hank Aaron has to be the furthest from his career stats.

Williams is still playing (for the Yankees) at the age of 43 currently has 3,107 hits and 535 HR's and a .326 lifetime BA, never hit .400

Ruth hit 757 HR's in career that lasted to 1940 (the most I see in HOF)

Shoeless Joe who in my opinion should be in the HOF ended his career with 3,621 hits.

The Cy Young award would be named the Dizzy Dean award, Dean has the most wins with 518, edging out Cy who retired with 495.

The most hits among players in the HOF is Lou Gehrig with 3,800 (Cobb 3445). Gehrig's career was extended since ALS is not in the code.

Looks like Aaron had a bunch of injuries. Did his ratings drop quite a bit because of that?

Wait, this is iOOTP? You started in 1903 and did not get fictional characters afterwards?

Yes. If you buy all the seasons you get real rookies each year.

Yes! One of nice pluses of getting all of the seasons. ( though fictional players can add their own interesting twist)

Update on Aaron. Signed a minor league deal with the White Sox kicked around their farm team and disappeared from baseball prior to opening day in 1965. The stats in my first post were his final ML stats.

Getting real rookies

That's great news about getting historic rookies by buying the next season.

Do how does this work? I bought and started a 1969 season. Is it enough to just buy the 1970 season before the amateur draft? How does my iOOTP know to not generate fictional players?

I've changed all the team names, division names, etc., but am using the 1969 players. That's not a problem, right?

I don't know at what point you need to be sure you you have purchased the season and don't want to steer you wrong. I purchased everything at once, the game plus all the seasons. Maybe someone else can answer who has purchased a season at a time. Remember before the regular season ends you get an email about the top prospects, I would assume it has to be before that point. I would assume at that point if it generates fictional your draft pool will be just that.

Interesting questions. Two really. If you change team names and cities will it still generate real players. My guess yes. And if you purchase a new season after starting a league but before draft will it generate real players. Again my guess is yes. Please play and let us know as I have all seasons too.

Does the fact that there never is expansion in iOOTP mean that fewer players are available for the amateur draft once your sim reaches recent years?

As far as I know, what philliupi and Edster are saying is correct. I already have all the seasons, so I don't know at what point you have to have a season for the real players to be pulled into the draft.

RE the question about fewer players showing up: I've simmed 10+ years while having all the seasons and haven't noticed the draft pools shrinking. I recognize a lot of names in the draft pools, but there are many I don't recognize either -- I've assumed that the game creates enough fictional players to fill the pool, but maybe those are guys whose careers ended in the minors IRL, or they had fleeting success in the majors IRL.

If you see anything funky happen, LMK and I will ask Sebastian. Thanks.

Edster, as you simmed past the years of major league expansion, did you notice whether the number of rounds of the amateur draft stayed the same, or whether the number of rounds increased?

If the number of rounds did not increase, was there an increase in the number of left-over (undrafted) free agents hanging around hoping to be hired?

If the 1903 season has only 16 teams, and iOOTP has no expansion, it seems the only possibilities are that (a) the game loads all of the next year's amateurs, or (b) only loads enough to maintain the number of draft rounds (or ratio of amateurs to teams).

Let me say this. I am playing a league that started in 1962. I am up to 1968. I checked the last few people drafted in round 7 and they were indeed MLBers. 1 never made it but was still in minor leagues. 1968 was 1st year of expansion at that time. When I complete 69 and 70 I'll check players and see if rounds increase.

Hammering Hank, maybe not so much

Just had the 1967 draft 108 players.

I started a game in 1967. Simmed to the same draft. 108 players also available.
