Talking Corus Cant - Pitcher - 1st decade.

I have to admit I find this game quite entertaining. Got it the day it was released and messed around with it for 3 days to get used to the mechanics then finally created the above named Corus Cant at the horror level.

Cant's 8 rpg points are split with 4 going to strength, 2 to constitution and 1 each to intelligence and dexterity. At the age of 18 his potentials are as follows - Vel 70, Control and Poise 50 and Stuff 40 (if I remember correctly). Cant is never going to be a good defensive pitcher nor is he ever going to bat well but his starting endurance of 11 though is something he plans on working at - HARD! Oh and he's strictly a two pitch man for now - fastball and sliders but that too will change.

Someone really should have put Cant out of his misery in high school but it's doubtful he would have had the brains to give up on his dream of the big leagues (and the blonde bimbettes). No surprise then that Cant (with a rating of 1.5 stars) has a very long walk the afternoon of the draft. 10 rounds into it and an offer finally comes in from Cincinnati. 283rd in the draft.. well at least it's an offer. Now where's Cincinnati again?

First season in A ball as a reliever and Cant makes a total of 69 appearances (9 as a starter). It isn't all bad but it ain't pretty at times. Still it's a start and our boy works hard all year long at the gym and gets some reward for it - promotion to double AA. Hey will that impress the gals!

Year G GS W L SV ERA IP HA R ER BB K CG SHO
2003, A 69 9 4 5 0 6.26 73.1 89 53 51 37 37 0 0

The next two years are spent in double A with more work at the gym. (Hey Cant has to get rid of all that pent-up testosterone somehow and the girls at the bar are definitely not impressed by a sometime ball player earning minimum wage!) Cant's improvement is steady but unspectacular and he's nearly maxed out his potential starting stats (with poise the only one lagging at 35) and all the work at the gym has resulted in an increase in his stuff and control stat to 50.

Year G GS W L SV ERA IP HA R ER BB K CG SHO
2004, AA 54 4 2 6 0 4.47 58.1 66 31 29 28 43 0 0
2005, AA 53 4 1 2 4 3.40 55.2 39 21 21 36 46 0 0

An unexpected call arrives at the end of 2005 from the GM. Triple A ball? Cant? Hmm the GM isn't sure but needs must as injuries abound. So Cant ends the season in triple A

2005, AAA 2 0 0 0 0 11.57 2.1 4 3 3 1 4 0 0

Not the most inspiring of numbers and the GM is distinctly unimpressed. So Cant's back down to double AA for spring training.

Not for long though as he gets the call up in the middle of spring training. This time Cant's determined to make a better fist of it (and boy is he practised at making those fists!)

The next three years pass in triple A. Cant continues to work his butt off and records increases in stuff to 70 and control to 60. The girls are still not biting (or licking either). Still the big lights are beckoning and surely once he reached the promised land they'll be falling at his feet!

Year G GS W L SV ERA IP HA R ER BB K CG SHO
2006, AAA 25 0 1 0 2 2.63 37.2 40 11 11 10 35 0 0
2007, AAA 40 2 4 3 0 4.83 59.2 70 33 32 27 45 0 0
2008, AAA 32 0 3 0 0 3.45 31.1 34 17 12 11 34 0 0

Nothing spectacular but Cant really shouldn't have made it this far so no complaint. Cant has really made strides in his endurance though (someone told him gals love endurance) and it's now up to 45.

Another spate of injuries and Cant finally gets the call up. MAJOR LEAGUE. Yeah Baby ! He finishes the season in ML ball.

Year G GS W L SV ERA IP HA R ER BB K CG SHO Teams
2008 5 0 0 0 0 0.00 10.1 3 0 0 6 8 0 0 CIN

Not too shabby at all but with the players recovered from their injuries Cant spends spring training back down in triple A. Still the cameo has whet his appetite (and he did get lucky with the fairer sex once)! Time to redouble the effort and get back to the promised land (ML ball and babes galore).

2009 sees Cant start in triple A.

2009, AAA 15 1 0 0 3 2.20 16.1 9 4 4 4 16 0 0

However some sterling performances allied to the reasonable appearance in his first call up soon result in another call from the GM. It's party time in the big leagues again . Cant slowly establishes his credentials with some steady performances. Oh and he finally found the value of reading. He's added the sinker and curveball to his repertoire initially and followed on with the splitter, change up, screwball and finally the knuckleball. In 2011 his first arbitration contract results in a paycheck for just over 1.47 million dollars. Impress the gals? Cant is going to buy the gals! Happy days are here!

Year G GS W L SV ERA IP HA R ER BB K CG SHO Teams

2011 71 0 6 6 0 4.24 85.0 87 46 40 34 57 0 0 CIN

Spring training in 2012 sees the fruition of Cant's hard work. His endurance of 51 convinces the manager to try Cant in the 5th spot of the starting rotation.

Month G GS W L SV ERA IP HA R ER BB K
March/April 6 6 1 2 0 4.00 36.0 37 16 16 13 25
May 5 5 2 1 0 2.59 31.1 21 9 9 13 21

3 months into it and Cant's performances have establised him as an integral part of the Cincinnati starting bullpen (not too difficult bearing in mind Cincinnati have failed to break .500 but twice in all the time Cant has been with the club). Cant is now at number 2 in the starting rotation.

Month G GS W L SV ERA IP HA R ER BB K
June 5 5 2 3 0 3.99 29.1 27 13 13 12 20

After some adjustment to the new spot Cant finishes the season strongly.

July 6 6 3 1 0 1.95 37.0 27 9 8 13 28
August 5 5 4 0 0 2.03 31.0 23 7 7 3 28
Sept./Oct. 7 7 3 1 0 3.05 38.1 34 14 13 13 28

Overall stats for the year

G GS W L SV ERA IP HA R ER BB K CG CG% SHO QS QS%
34 34 15 8 0 2.93 203.0 169 68 66 67 150 0 .0 0 20 58.8

His ERA of 2.93 has him 2nd in the NL and 5th overall and he's 28th on the leaderboard for games won.

So the future? Well in a year's time Cant will be able to negotiate a new contract and he sure as hell is going to leave Cincinnati ASAP. Besides the gals are hotter elsewhere ! The question is how far Cant can go. Surely a world series is a possibility and with a little more luck and hard work some pitching records. Not too bad for a lad who might never have made it this far except for the fact he wasn't intelligent enough to realise it!

2013

Last season at Cincinnati. Thank god for that. Got paid just over 3.5 million via arbitration. Went into free agency with a 4.5 star rating and had quite a number of offers the best of which from Texas for just under 8.5 million for 4 years. However Texas's record of dead last in 7 out of the last 10 seasons didn't exactly make them hot favorites. They did have some nice talent coming up but in the end signed for 7.5 mill for 4 years with the Red Sox - still looking for a WS.

2014

A season of firsts. First time at top spot in the starting rotation. First time winning the pitcher of the month leading to first appearance at the All Star game. The Red Sox finished 2nd (13 games) behind those damned Yankees. Poor start initially followed by some shrewd wheeling and dealing culminating in a strong finish. Out with the older players and in with some young blood. The starting pitchers are young but all have potential. More impressive are the pitchers working out of the bullpen. All are rated at 4 stars and our closer is 4.5 stars. On top of which the batting lineup has also been refreshed though again the players are youngsters. All in all the next season looks exciting.

2015

Another season of consolidation. On a personal note another appearance at the All Star game. Finish 2nd in the division behind the Yankees but we're only 2.5 games behind. Squeak by Texas in 5 games and then it's the Yankees for the Pennant. 4-3 win! We're going to the World Series. It goes to 7 games as well but the Sox edge the Giants 4-3.

2016

The youngsters have come of age. Go 9-1 in the first half of the season but fail to make the All Star game!! This insult spurs Cant on to a 15-3 finish and the 24-4 record with an ERA of 2.68 resulting in a Cy Young award. Red Sox finish 1st in the Division with a 122-40 record (Devil Rays push Yanks into 3rd but are still a massive 29.5 games behind). Post-season record of 11-0 results in 2nd consecutive World Series. Can't wait for 2017 as the team is going to be essentially unchanged.

2017

Another crushing season. Cant goes 23-4 with an ERA of 2.17 picking up two pitcher of the month awards, an appearance at the All Star game and a 2nd Cy Young award. Red Sox go 121-41 and cruise into the World Series winning 7 straight games to match up against the Cubs (who had squuezed through into post-season 2nd in their division with an 89-73 record). It goes to 7 games and the Cubs win it 7-5. Who says baseball is predictable?

Cant finishes the season committing himself to the Sox for a further 6 years at 12 million a year. However that may well prove a mistake as there are a number of starters who are all up for free agency after 2018.

The question is will Cant make the HOF?
