giving up salary....
Although I deserve 15 million or more a year (perennial Slick Fielder and All-Star catcher that usually bats around .350 with 25-35 hrs and 100 rbis), I just signed an extension for only 6 million.
My hope is that ownership can spend more on the rest of the team and I can add to my two World Series rings. Anybody else try this? Did it work? |

my only free agency i had in my prime i took a $20 mil deal so i could play for my minnesota team (go twins!) instead of the $25 mil that san diego offered to keep me. the 20 mil deal won me my first WS ring and i got all 7 of my MVP awards in MN. san diego never went to the playoffs in my 17 year pro career

I think that perhaps I should take a stand against high salaries when my current contract runs out. I have over 400 HRs and over .300 for a career BA. I have a around a $10 million contract with Cleveland (wanted to go back home after starting my career with Los Angeles). I think that I may look to get a 4 year deal (I will be 35) for the league minimum.
Maybe not, though. ![]()

I think signing for less really makes a difference if it's rings that you're after. In my second career, I made sure to sign for as much as possible (18 million for 4 years). We lost our best pitcher and slugger that year to free agency. When it came time to renew, I signed for 7 million per year, and within three years we signed the previous years Cy Young winner and two really good sluggers. We won the next two championships and went to the playoffs four years in a row.

Sadly, my plan didn't work out so well. By the time my contract was up my skills were starting to fade. I was coming off a .266 year with 33 HR and 101 RBI, but nobody was offering me a contract (my skills weren't even under 60 for power and contact...). I had to go to a number of teams myself and decided to take a 2 year deal for $5 mil per with reigning pennant winners, the St. Louis Monarchs. We got to the Championship, but got swept.... I hit .249 with 22 HR and 79 RBI and hit a smoldering 0-16 in the Championship series. I am 26 homers away from 500 but I don't know if I will get there....
