The Journal of Randy Corcoran

Well after my years of practice my work has paid off. I was the 8th overall draft pick of the Expos. Going straight from high school to the minors will be a learning experience but I hope I can do alright. I will start out at the A club and will be the starting catcher there and bat in the number 8 hole. I hope my offense is good enough that they will move me up but I guess I will have to prove myself there. I leave tomorrow for spring training. My dreams have finally come true.

I can't believe my first year was over and what a disaster it has been. I haven't had much time to keep this updated because my first season here has been a lot harder that I thought. I have had a hard time making friends so far and had a very tough year at the plate. These guys here really know how to pitch and I just haven't had time to adjust. I keep trying to buy beer for my manager hoping he will give me some tips but he always drinks me under the table. Anyway my first year was tough and I only hit the mendoza line with 8 homers and 40 RBI. I also struck out 62 times and only walked 12. I know I really need to work hard in the offseason if I want to accomplish my dreams. There are thousands of other guys waiting to replace me and if you don't produce you won't last long here. Well I am off to drown my sorrows. The only bright spot so far is I can get beer anywhere I go. Maybe that's my problem.

5/25/04 - Well a new attitude and a lot of hard work have paid off so far this year. The only downside is I suffered broken ribs from a play at the plate. I did manage to hold on to the ball and make the out but the doctor told me I am out for the next 5 weeks. I have managed to stay away from the bar this year and have worked closely with the manager and the hitting coach and it has really paid off. So far an average of .318 with 7 homers and 16 RBI. Can't wait for these stupid ribs to heal to get back out there and compete.

7/30/04 Well they say you never think it will happen and I never did. I am one of those dreaded players to be named later. The Expos major league team is gearing up for the stretch run and traded me and two other minor league prospects to the Dodgers for their staff ace Don Cali. I guess I should be flattered that LA thought enough of me to want me in a trade for their best pitcher but it still hurts a bit to be traded. Otherwise my year is still going great hitting .322 with 11 homers and 38 rbi. LA will keep me in A ball for a bit but I will move from the 8 hole to the 7 hole. All I can do is keeping working as hard as I can to improve but I will miss the players and coaches I had in Montreal.

8/22/03 Well maybe the trade to the Dodgers was a good thing. I got called in to Skips office today and he told me I am going to AA. I am really excited about this. There is only about a week left in the minor league season so I'll just get a taste of up there but hopefully I can do enough that they will want me there next year. My final A numbers this year ended up being .324 11 hr 47 rib 41 runs scored 44 k's and 23 walks. I hope I can keep up the improvment.

8/31/04 Well in the time I spent here in AA, it has been very positive. I hit 391 in 23 at bats with 4 rbi. I am really starting to feel like I belong here and I think I am starting to turn some heads in the front office. I really can't wait till see what next year will bring. This will be a long off season for me.

7/14/04 Well I can't believe it has happened. I never really got in the groove in AA hitting only .260 but today I got the call up to AAA. I was told I will be starting and hitting in the 6 hole. I will turn 21 next month and I am in AAA which is so awesome. I can't help now but think what is next. The parent club are struggling but they have a decent catcher by the name of Brian Jesus. When they traded for me he was really struggling and wasn't even hitting his weight. My luck though, this year he found his stroke and is hitting .292. I can't control what he does so all I can do is go out everyday and play hard and show that I belong in the bigs.

Well AAA was very kind to me to end the year. I hit .311 with 5 homers and 22 rbi. I'm still not sure what next year will bring. They didn't give me a Sept call up this year but I will begin spring training with the big club next year. Skip told me that most likely end up back in AAA at least to start the year but I do have a shot to catch in with the big club. It will just be great to get an opportunity to blay with major league players and see what I can do againts big league pitching. I will be working out with my hitting coach most of the off season to work on my swing and also to get better at hitting the breaking ball.

4/1/05 I had a great spring and I managed to make the big club out of spring training. The only downside is I will be backing up Brian Jesus. It is still a great opportunity for me to learn up here. I am talking with any players who will listen. Everyone has been great to me but Brian has been a little standoffish so far. I guess I would be too in his situation. I've been hanging out with alot of the pitchers so I get the chance to know all of them and what they like to do in situations. It will help not only with my catching but also help me to learn they way pitchers think and what I can expect when I bat. Look out LA here I come

Well my first year in the bigs was a suceess. By the end of the year I had won the starting cathcers job. Most of the team was behind me as Brian has not endeared himself to his teammates. It should be an interesting offseason as I doubt both us will be back here next year. My first year I ended up hitting 263 with 7 homers and 43 rbi. Not great numbers but I am pretty happy with them being it's my first year and I didnt start till three quarters of the year was gone. The team struggled once again finishing 69-93 as we really fell apart once August hit. We are near the bottom of every category in both hitting and pitching.
