Going out at the top of your game.
I was interested to see how my first career character, an outfielder with good contact and gap numbers but low power, would fare at the end of his career. I had read other posts and expected my character to decline and hang around and look really woeful in his last year or two. But that didn't happen. My character's numbers did start to slowly decline in his last two seasons, but I knew by then to be ready with some money to buy books, and reading the books kept his contact number at the peak, 80, while his other numbers stayed near his peak. But his retirement still surprised me. He retired suddenly at the end of one of his best seasons, in which he made the All-Star team for the 3rd time in his career, at age 37. Talk about going out on top. Here are his career stats.

He was an all-star in 2005, 2009, and 2018. He won one World Series ring, in 2016. He led the league in hits twice, 09 and 11, and in average one, in 2011. He also led the league four times in stolen bases, 2013-16 (after I finished reading the Henderson books). He finished high on the career hits, triples, and stolen base lists. And he was voted into the Hall of Fame. It was quite a surprise after the 2018 season to find that he had retired. But I think he (I) made the right decision. |
