As I promised two months ago, this is the continuing story of Stan Baker:
"Hi. I'm Leonard Baker, new graduate from Bill E. Beene State University. You can call me Len. You've probably never heard of me. That's OK. You might have heard of the star shortstop on our team, Stanley Baker. He's my brother. What? You've never heard of him either? That's OK too, I guess. We're a Division IV school that plays no one in particular. Stan has done really well there, and he leads the team in almost every hitting category. He might be the first person ever drafted from our school. "Stan and I have always been close. We're a year apart - I'm older - and Stan has agreed to let me be his business manager and agent. Isn't that exciting? I also get to advise him on stuff like where to sign, what equipment to buy and whether he should hit on that cute young thing in the corner. Ahem... I digress. "Well, I'm sure you're all ready to learn more about my brother Stan, so why don't we do that?" NUTS & BOLTS Stan is a left-handed hitting shortstop who was born on September 1, 1981 and wears #99. He throws righty, of course. He's an even 6 feet tall and an even 200 pounds. He will - hopefully - be drafted out of college. His RPG skills are distributed like this: Strength - +1 Intelligence - +2 Dexterity - +2 Constitution - +1 Charisma - +1 Luck - +3 And these are his estimated skills: Contact hitting - 3 HR power - 3 Eye/patience - 8 Gap power - 3 Fielding ability - 6 Running speed - 5 Stolen bases - 5 Hitting vs. lefties - 5 And this is his initial equipment: * Bat - Silver Slugger A1 (+1 to contact) * Batting gloves - Magic Sticks BGL-1 (+1 to contact) * Glove - Web Gems IF-1 (+1 to defense) * Shoes - Pegasus V1 (+1 to speed) This is all on HARD difficulty level, by the way. Now, I'll turn things over to Len. 2003 DRAFT "Stan's rated by the scouts like this: Contact - 8 (30) Eye - 40 (80) Power - 14 (30) Gap - 15 (30) Defense - 51 Running speed - 50 Stealing instincts - 50 Hitting lefties - 50 Overall - ** (out of 5*) "I don't agree; I think he's a lot better than that. But we'll get a chance to prove it after the draft. Meanwhile we're both waiting by the phone for it to ring... "The first round goes by, no call... The second round goes by, no call... How about the third round... "Ring ring" "Hello?" Stan answers nervously. "Hi. This is Lenny Faedo. I'm the General Manager for the Minnesota Twins. We've used the 77th overall pick on you! Congatulations! And because we're so generous, we'll even give you a $200,000 bonus! Once again, welcome to the Twins and we'll tell you where our A team is later." "Boy there was some celebrating that night! But the day after, we had some work to do - time to use that bonus to select some equipment. Stan wanted to hit the bar immediately but I told him no, maybe later. We find a nice glove made by LeatherTech, the WP1, that costs a reasonable $126,000 and would help his fielding significantly. Stan kept whining about wanting a Wonderboy, but there's no way he can afford one of those. In fact, he can't afford any of the bats in the store - not that he can use them anyway. APRIL: "Players in A-ball are all given $250 a week and Stan is no exception. That's barely enough to buy drinks in this town. Good thing he still has $74,000 left from his signing bonus. Perhaps it will come in handy. "Stan is inserted in the starting lineup right away as the #7 hitter. Amos Chavez is the othe shortstop on the team. Nobody knows how good he is, but he's really young - just 18. "Here's Stan's workout schedule: Monday - Leg Cycles, Leg Flex, BP, off Tuesday - Lower Flex, Arm Flex, Fielding Drills, off Wednesday - Bench Press, Internal Rotation, BP, off Thursday - Internal Rotation, Reverse Fly, Extra Running, off Friday - Dumbbell Squats, Lower Flex, BP, off Saturday - Dot Drill, Upper Flex, Eztra Running, off Sunday - Dumbbell Squats, Upper Flex, BP, off "The trainer says the balance between strength and flexibility is perfect (1.50) for a man of Stan's age. It's not very exhausting either. "Stan sold his old glove for $12,221. That'll buy a couple of years' worth of drinks. "He made a big splash in his first year of pro ball - in 26 games he hit .282 with 6 doubles and 2 homers. He also stole 5 bases in 6 tries. If he keeps this up, Minneapolis won't be far away!" MAY: "The good news for Stan is his ratings are up, but the bad news is his average is down to .263. He's hit 4 home runs and driven in 18 in 156 at bats. He's scored 28 runs and stolen 7 bases. Unfortunately, the manager has moved him down to #8 in the lineup." JUNE: "Stan's back up to .276. His OBP is a stellar .379 and his slugging % isn't bad either at .436. There's nothing useful in the stores or on bBay that we can afford right now, so we'll just save his money for a rainy day." JULY: "A big month moved his average up to .291. He's swatting the ball all over the field, as his 21 doubles, 2 triples, and 9 taters testifies. He's drawn 52 walks so far this season in only 326 at bats, so he's been on base a lot. They really should bat him at the top of the order, but these days he's hitting 6th. With his power and average, that's not a bad spot either, I guess." AUGUST: "Stan had a good first season in A ball: Code:

It cost most of his stash ($73,500) but I think it will help his hitting. We can sell his old bat on bBay." "Since his season is over, there's nothing to do now but root for Minnesota. They're doing OK, I guess; just 63-67, but that's good enough for a tie for first in the division." SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER: "The old bat went for $14,916. More bar money!" "Stan's end of season ratings look like this: Contact - 24 HR power - 25 Gap power - 27 Batting eye - 47 Defense - 51 Speed - 52 Stealing - 50 vs. lefties - 50 OFFSEASON: "Stan continues to work out and improve himself. 2004 SEASON
"Even though Stan is disappointed about returning for another year to A-ball, he continues to work hard and is committed to getting the Twins to stand up and take notice. At least he's hitting fifth in the order these days."
APRIL: "Lookin' good so far - my brother is hitting .324 with 3 homers and 22 RBI in 105 at bats. He's also hit 9 doubles and scored 20 runs. I'd say he's too good for this league." MAY: "Sorry all you haters out there, but Stan is getting better and better. His average is up to .337. The OBP is an outstanding .430, and the slugging % is a hefty .510. He's also swiped six bases just for the fun of it. I don't think they can keep him down on the farm for too much longer." JUNE: "On the 13th, the opposing managers in A ball decided to buy Stan a ticket out of there for AA. Ha ha, just kidding. He was called up after raising his average to .342. "Unfortunately, they brought him up just to ride the pine. He only had four at bats in his two weeks at AA. He played in 7 games and was hit by the pitch once. He's playing behind a total schlub named Carlos Guerra, a 23-year-old shortstop non-prospect that couldn't hold Stan's jock. But that's just my opinion. He's hitting .234 at AA so far this season, down from .267 last year. Loser. Stan will eat him for lunch if he ever gets a real chance." JULY: "Stan had one big game where he went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, 2 runs scored and 4 RBIs. Unfortunately, those were his only hits of the month as his average skidded to .154. He pinch hits a lot and is a defensive replacement, which is really tough. He wants to get in and get his hacks every day, and I'm sure he'll do better once he does." AUGUST: "As I expected, he got a little more PT and played better. Let's take a look at the numbers for the year: Code:

2005 SEASON
"Stan is scheduled to sit on the bench and watch mediocrity Amos Chavez try to play short. Chavez his .290 in A ball and .333 in five games at AAA. I'm sure this injustice will be rectified soon."
APRIL: "Stan hit .250 in mopup work (32 at bats), driving in 4 runs and scoring 5. Chavez isn't doing much better at .243 with similar OBP and SLG stats." MAY: "My brother is going through a little slump right now, so he's not in the best of moods. He has 4 doubles and 2 homers among his 11 hits, so his slugging percentage is still decent at .420. But the .220 average won't cause anyone to turn any heads. But the Twins' owner did stop by one day while Stan was drowning his miseries. I think Stan had one too many because he couldn't get anything out of him." JUNE: "He can't shake that funk he's in. His average has drifted up to .225 and he's drawing some more walks, but he's not hitting with any power. Chavez was called up to AAA and in his place comes Esteban Cassano, who's 24. He's bounced around among all three minor league levels the past three seasons. He's currently hitting .292 at AA. Stan's not too happy about the competition." JULY: "He continues to improve little by little. His average is up to .238. He still has those 2 homers but he's up to 10 RBI in 84 AB. He's drawn 13 walks and only struck out 8 times. He also has two stolen bases." AUGUST: "The minor league season is over and Stan didn't get out of AA. They finished at 75-55, thanks to my brother. Let's take a look at the rap sheet: Code:

2006 SEASON
"Stan is batting 5th in the manager's lineup while Esteban Cassano rides the pine behind him. Sounds fair to me."
APRIL: "The AA team is off to a fast start - 19-7 - not that it matters any. But Stan is holding his own - .260 batting average, 3 homers, 10 RBI, 18 runs scored. He continues to draw plenty of walks, so his OBP is a healthy .388. Perhaps he'll catch the eye of someone important soon." MAY: "More of the same - in 183 AB, Stan has racked up 49 hits (.268 BA), 10 doubles, 2 triples, and 5 homers. He has also stolen 5 bases. But I can tell his mood is sour, so I join him at the bar to kick back some booze. That helps a little. I hope we get out of this godforsaken city soon." JUNE: "Terrible news! After the game on June 5, Stan was diagnosed with an inflamed hamstring muscle. This will put him on ice for 6 weeks or so. He was hitting .271 at the time." JULY: "He got back in the lineup around mid month and was better than ever. He's hiked his average to .289, his OBP is still good at .427, and his slugging % is fine at .479. He's stolen 10 bases so far this year. His scout ratings have backslid because of the injury, but I'd rather have great stats than great ratings any day. I'm sure Stan would agree." AUGUST: "Great news! Stan's performance has finally gotten notice and he got the call to head to AAA on August 15. He must have left his bat in AA because he only hit .128 in 47 at bats there. He was very, very tired. But no matter, as the Twins call him up to their active roster!" SEPTEMBER: "Minnesota is in a hot pennant race with Chicago. They've been swapping the lead back and forth for months and currently both have 68-62 records. The Twins have four shortstops on the roster. Dan Schaefer is the current starter - 31 years old and hitting .267 with 23 HR and 72 RBI this season. This is a career year for him, by far. Amos Chavez (.281, 3, 13 in 64 ABs) and Henry Gillum (.212, 3, 9 in 80 ABs) are the backups. I don't see a lot of playing time for my kid brother. But at least he is in the majors. "We get a little extra money from the owner, so Stan and I go shopping. The improved bats are just out of his price range, so we concentrate on batting gloves and shoes. We pick out the Cobbsville TY-1 gloves which will help his power, and we put in a bid for some Mazano shoes that will help his defense. "We didn't win the bid for the shoes, but his old gloves sold for $18,394. That's just enough, combined with the rest of his money, to get the Mazano shoes at the sports store. Now not only is he stylin', he's a force to be reckoned with! The old shoes sold for $12,328, which will buy a lot of beers. "He played in games on the 1st and 2nd, totalling 3 at bats in that time. He scored and drove in a run, but had no hits. At least he's still fielding 1.000. "The team has faded to 80-78, 5 games behind Chicago and are officially out of playoff contention." OCTOBER: "They officially sent Stan back to AAA after the season. Disappointing, but no real surprise. The Twins aren't hurting at the shortstop position. "Let's take a look at those stats from the past season: Code:

2007 SEASON
"The good news is Stan is batting third in the lineup. The bad new is that he's doing it for the AA team. He's getting a little frustrated at being so far down the latter when he should be at the peak of his career. I tell him that good things are coming, but even I'm not sure anymore."
APRIL: "Stan bruised his heel on April 12. This wasn't serious, and he played through it. Right after that, he got The Call. That's right, he's heading for Minnesota! Yeah! He was only hitting .400 at the time." "The good news is he hit .500 in his time in the majors. The bad news is it was only 4 at bats. Both of his hits came in the same game. He still has Schaefer and Chavez ahead of him, so he grabs playing time when he can. "We bought a Natural Lumbar AB-II to help Stan's hitting across the board." "Oh, and his rookie card has moved up to 7 cents!!!!!!!" MAY: "Stan's old bat sold for $81,082." "He only got one hit this month in 12 tries, bringing his average down to .188. He has drawn three walks, making is OBP a not-too-bad .316. But I'm sure he'd play better if he got more playing time." "I saw Stan's rookie card the other day selling for 13 cents. So at least that's moving." JUNE: "He only played 4 games this month, with one at bat. His average is down to .176. Stan almost wishes he were anywhere else getting playing time. Not playing for the 4th place Twins (30-49, 10 games out) is not very much fun." "Speculators have drivne Stan's rookie card up to 16 cents, but I know not why." JULY: "Stan got a little bit more playing time and even a couple of starts. In 10 at bats he had 5 hits, scored 4 runs, and had a double. That brings his average up to .296. For the season he has 10 runs scored and zero RBIs. I guess he's used a lot as a pinch runner. "Minnesota is still terrible - they're now at 40-63 and 13 games out. "His rookie card is up to 28 cents." AUGUST: "Ah, the life of a utility infielder. Stan cracked his first home run this month, off Cleveland's Erik Lester. His average has drifted up to .333 (11-for-33), which is certainly more than acceptable. He's also stolen 2 bases in 3 tries." SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER: "They sent Stan down to AA at the end of the season. I imagine they want to save costs. Whatever. The Twins finished well out of the pennant race." Code:

2008 SEASON
In the back alley of the seedy section of the Twins' AA affiliate, two men meet and negotiate on a deal.
"I knew you'd come to me eventually," said one with confidence. "Yeah, well, my brother Stan is tired of being unsuccessful and tired of the minor leagues," replied the other. "He wants superstardom and he wants it in a hurry," "These top secret plans have helped many ballplayers look a lot better than they were before they came to me. No guarantees, but I think they can help you out too." "Well, then, give it up!" "Uh uh. First you've got to show me the money." Len looks around, to see if there are any cops, winos, drug dealers, beggars, or team officials around. No one is around and it's perfectly quiet - except for the random gunfire and police sirens. Finally he flips out a wad of cash and places most of it into the mystery man's hands. The man takes a discreet look around and produces a folder and a small baggie. "In the folder is a workout schedule that your boy should follow. And just in case they don't work, I scored some performance-enhancing drugs just in case. There aren't any drug tests in your league, are there?" "No, of course not. The ILB is drug test free." "Good. I have to go now. I hope to never see you again." "Thank you, Mr. tneu." APRIL: "Stan has changed his workout plan to something we think will help him make it to the majors to stay. One day after his improved plan, his contact talent improved by 10 points. What a surprise! ![]() "Stan was called up to the Twins' major league roster on April 21. Excellent! "Let's add up what has happened to Stan. At AA, he only hit .188 in 19 games, but drew an outlandish 21 walks, making his OBP there .395. He only played in 2 big league games, but he got 2 hits in 5 trips to the plate, for a .400 average. "Oh yes, his rookie card is up to 96 cents." MAY: "Stan got a lot of playing time, but didn't exactly make the most of his opportunity - in 10 games and 33 at bats he could only manage a .182 average. He did slice a triple, though. "Stan's piggybank is big enough to allow him to purchase a Cobbsville CB II, which will help him hit more screaming line drives for base hits. And his card price has gone to $1.24." JUNE: "Stan was demoted to AA on June 4. Oh well, it was fun in Minnesota while it lasted. His old bat went for $147,944. "He comes down with a stiff shoulder on June 30. His abilities are hurt a bit, but he had recovered to hit .257 at AA for the year. He has 4 HR and 25 RBI there. Not great, but we hope that's enough to get another callup sometime this season." JULY: "Stan moved up to AAA on July 10. He hit .274 in 62 at bats there with the usual bunches of walks. No power yet, but I'm sure that will come." AUGUST: "The season has ended at AAA and Stan ended up hitting .268 there. They were lousy, ending up at 52-78." SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER: "No late season callup this year, so Stan had to watch the Twins' medicore season from the minors. Let's look at the season's record: Code:

2009 SEASON
"Stan is the backup shortstop on the Twins' roster. 24-year-old Amos Chavez (.264, 8, 59) is the starter for now. Everyone I've talked to thinks Stan is really better, but we have to convince management of this fact. That may not be easy, since Chavez is making $1.7 million this year."
APRIL: "On April 6, Larry from the Workout Palace tells us that Stan's power talent has increased by 10. Excellent. Tneu's workout plan is working perfectly. "Stan played fairly regularly this month but I can't say he played well. 16 games, 43 at bats, 8 hits (.186 BA), 1 double. Even his fielding is out of whack, with 7 errors at short already. All this has made Stan pretty surly. I tell him to go blow off some steam at the bar. "Stan's rookie card is up to $2.43." MAY: "I can't believe it. Stan's average actually went DOWN, to .154. It's only 65 at bats, so no one is panicking yet. But in the back of my mind is the fact that someone may pull the trigger and send Stan back to AAA or worse. He doesn't really want to go, of course." JUNE: "Stan's playing even more, but not a lot better. This month he played in 23 games and had 68 at bats. He hit .221 with 1 HR and 5 RBI. He did score 8 runs, which is kinda nice. His average for the year is still south of the Mendoza line at .188. "Inexplicably, his rookie card keeps going up in value. It's now at $3.57." JULY: 15-for-77 this month (.195) as he inexplicably had 15 RBI. I guess he made all those hits count. He did draw 15 walks this month, so he was on base some. Chavez is on the bench, probably for good, while Stan takes his lumps. The good news is that Minnesota is only 3 games out of first. The bad news is that they're 49-54 and in 4th place. "Stan's card is up to $4.88." AUGUST: "On August 12 Stan came down with a stiff shoulder. He played through it since it only lasted a few days. "Then on August 20 came the call Stan and I had been dreading - he's being sent back to AAA. Just when he was starting to get better... "Anyway, he hit .267 in 30 at bats in AAA and was .207 overall in Minnesota. "His rookie card is selling for $5.98. To whom, I don't know. "Minnesota is now 6 games out. It doesn't look like it's going to be their year." SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER: "Stan's gap talent increased by 10 during the postseason. Always good news. The rest of the season, not such good news: Code:

2010 SEASON
"Stan starts the season as the starting shortstop, batting 9th in the lineup."
APRIL: "It looks like the start of another miserable season. Stan is only hitting .184 with very limited power (only 4 doubles in 87 AB). If he doesn't get it going, people are going to talk about shipping him back down. I tell him this." MAY: "On the 14th he got some good news from Larry - his contact talent has gone up another 10 points. Let's see how it translates in on-the-field performance... "It helped, a little. His average moved up to .200 and he hit his first two homers of the season. His OBP and SLG% are both at .294 and that will NOT get you to the All-Star game. Stan's gotta pick it up, somehow." JUNE: "Stan buys some Magic Sticks BGL-II batting gloves in an effort to shore up his batting average. The old gloves went for $356,051. "He only hit .197 this month but drew 15 walks for an OBP of .337. That gives him hope that he's not overmatched, but his average for the year is still a weak .199. They may not put up with this for too much longer. "His rookie card is gathering dust at $12.64." JULY: "He strained his bicep looking in the mirror at himself on July 10. This put him on the shelf for 2 weeks and they placed him on the disabled list to heal. "He did a short stint at AAA to get ready (he hit .375 in 6 games there), then brought him back up at the end of the month. He's now hitting .207." AUGUST: "Stan bruised his wrist doing something... um, well, I'd rather not say. He played through the injury for about 2 weeks. "It didn't stop him from having the best month of this year, and perhaps his career - .312 in 22 games (77 AB), 6 doubles, 2 HR, 12 runs, 11 RBI. He did only draw 5 walks, so someone must have been telling him to stop taking so many pitches and hit the ball. Probably good advice. He's hitting .233 now for the season." "He met some guy named Steve Kuffrey in the bar. He gave him some good advice, but it didn't help him because he knew everything." SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER: "Minnesota finishes well out of the pennant chase at 81-81. "Stan cooled off a little toward the end of the year to finish up at .232. Code:

2011 SEASON
"Stan had a decent season last year, but there are still some rumblings that he should be replaced. His mission is to silence all the doubters and prove he belongs in the big leagues.
APRIL: "You'd better hide the children and others who are weak of heart. Stan had 85 at bats but only 13 hits - adding up to a .153 average. He only had 2 doubles and 1 homer among the hits. He's starting to hear some boos. "Inexplicably, his rookie card is at $22.67." MAY: "Stan buys a Silver Slugger Ghost to try to get his way out of this terrible slump. "The old bat went for $622,285. Good riddance. Armed with his new bat, he hit .287 for the month with better power (4 doubles and 2 HR in 87 AB). He's now hitting .221 for the season." JUNE: "Stan continues to get hot - .315 this month with 3 HR. His OPS for the season is an unimpressive .719, but considering he started under .500, and it looks pretty good." JULY: "He pushed his average to .262 when he got the news that he had been traded to Detroit. It's a straight swap for some guy named B. Larkins whom I have never heard of. I'm sure he's not related to the other guy with a vaguely similar name. Anyway, the Twins were in 5th at the time, and Detroit in 4th. Neither of them are going to make the playoffs anytime soon. But let's go Tigers! "The trade and everything his pushed his card price up to $30.67." AUGUST: "Stan signs an extension with the Tigers for $2.6 million a year for 3 years. Perhaps this is low because the owner didn't blink before accepting. But at least Stan is sure to get paid well for the next few years. If he doesn't get released. "Stan cooled off a lot for his new team as he could only compile a .198 average. That brings his average for the year back to .248." SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER: "On September 9, my brother was injured sliding into second. The tender shoulder won't keep him out of the lineup, but it will take about a week to fully heal. "Detroit ended up finishing last in the division, and Stan didn't help much. He ended up at .246. Here's the rest of the story: Code:
