Sonofa!
Drafted by the Dodgers, played 2 years of A ball, moved up to AAA, then shuffled down to AA. Traded to Oakland during the off-season of 2005-2006, where I managed to make their pro roster. Batted pretty low, just over .200, but was leading the league in stolen bases. I get the call, you're going down to AAA, no problem, I need to work on my hitting anyhow... next day, I get the call, I think, ya they must miss my speed in the bigs... nope, outright released... sons a bit....

Ouch, that hurts. You'd think you'd still be getting paid (over time at least, if not in one chunk). Still....I wouldn't worry. I had a pitcher outright not get drafted. I sat around for two years before the Padres signed me as a free agent. That was during the off-season though...I wonder if you can get signed mid-season?
