One of the more enjoyable games I've played in the last year is Tropico. Part of what made that cool is that the dictator always had some particular strength and sort of personal failing. For example, a strong military leader but who has turets syndrome, or a good negotiator who is also a drunken womanizer.
Not all ball players have noticelbe foibles. But some do and it would be fun to add that into the game. Possibly allowing the player greater abilities in exchange for having a potentially fatal flaw. So I could be a relief pitcher with a blazing fastball who is also a loud mouthed bigot, or a slugger who is also an angry loner, or a hustling contact hitter who is also a compuslive gambler, or a home run king who is also a drunken womanizer, or a great hitter who feuds with the press, or....

This is something I'd like to see implemented in OOTP5 as well, but I think it would be neat if your reputation/prestige would be dependent on your own actions. For instance, making an error in a crucial game would brand you a goat. Hitting a homerun to win the World Series in the last at bat of the 9th inning of game 7 would brand you a hero. If the game allows you to have a "style" (for instance, maybe you grow a distinctive fu manchu) maybe the fans would start to mimic you. Having high prestige would lead to more interview requests, more fans in the stands, more autograph requests, more commercial deals, etc. Likewise prestige could work in the opposite direction and you could gain a reputation like Barry Bonds has, famous but unliked. A player with high prestige could be booed loudly when he makes a mistake (striking out, making a fielding error, etc) and have the biggest response when coming to the plate. If you jump ship for a ton of money, maybe when you visit the stadium for your former team their is a bigger crowd and they boo incessantly (or maybe there are a few people with Yankees, er, I mean your new team's hats in the stands). There could be local popularity and national popularity based on the way you conduct yourself in interviews and in fan relations.
I know it seems I'm going a bit overboard, but baseball is a game of personalities more than statistics and achievements and I think it would be amazing and incredibly innovative if .400 Software were able to do this well. And if this were also carried over into OOTP5 you'd have to deal with it as a GM as well. Maybe that new slugger you just signed has a rough time hitting in his old home park because of the catcalls. There is literally an infinite number of ways that reputation/prestige could affect the game from superficially to the very core. Imagine if someone could get rattled like Mitch Williams did after the 93 Series. This would also make newspaper articles more interesting since the quotes and such could be based on reputation. And of course the All-Star choices and contract requests. This would be so difficult to program but man, the immersion factor...maybe you guys could hire Molyneux from Black/White and Project Ego fame to help out. Jason

I'd like to see these types of quirks especially in ITP, although some of them would be nice in OOTP. (Especially the fan favorite/prestige rating).

Hate to contribute to this "ITP" thread, but there is no doubt Bonds is a jerk. He made no bones about it himself until he hit 73. Now it seems he's in "political spin" mode. I heard Cardinals announcer Mike Shannon on the Dan Patrick show last year. The subject of Barry Bonds came up and Shannon said "I don't know...I've never spoken to the guy. He makes it very clear he doesn't want to be bothered". Gee, he won't even talk to the announcers. It is a damn shame he broke the record.

Who does like the media?? They are flat out annoying and always 24/7 looking for dirt. Theres alot of guys in sports who get sick of it after awhile and I don't blame them. Just wondering when the media will get a key to their front door. I would feel the same way.

Barry Bonds is from the Steve Carlton school of dealing with the media - i.e. you've had your chance to treat me fairly, you blew it, leave me alone.
Bonds is one of the nicest people I can think of in sports. How many times has he been disrespectful to the fans in San Fran? One thing a lot of people don't seem to realize about Bonds is that he had to deal with a lot of crap when he played here (Pittsburgh). He's said in the past that the reason he left this city was less for money and more to escape the racism and the press. I wonder if there's something in the air in this state that cities at both ends (and basically in different geographical regions of the country) are known primarily for having racist fans and awful sports journalists. Wether or not Bonds collaborates with medias is pretty much irrelevant. The fact is that he's a great ball player, he showed it woth homeruns, stolen bases and great defense. He's a great baseball player and that's what matters.

How can you say Bonds is liked? He even has his own locker so he doesn't have to talk to his teammates.
