Work ethic vs. exposure
Might a player have to decide how much of his time to devote to different aspects of his life?
You could take the Lou Gehrig route, working on your skills but gaining little exposure or notoriety off the field. You could spend time on the town, showing up on the society pages (a la Jeter or A-Rod). Heck, you could even do as Karim Abdul Jabbar did a couple years back, and waste your time playing a video game of yourself, staying up so late at night your performance suffers the next day.
That would be worth it if only for the irony of being upset with your computer self for wasting his time playing a computer verison of himself rather than bettering his life.
But the serious idea is finding a balance between activities that help your skills and activities which make you more marketable or glamorous.
