Re-inventing yourself

Has there been any thought to options such as spending some of your pitcher's offseason time learning a new pitch? Or spending your third baseman's offseason learning to play the outfield? Or taking up switch-hitting?

I'm thinking of the impact it could have on a guy's career if, for example, your straight fastball pitcher comes back next season with a wicked slider.

what about deciding to spend the off-season playing winter ball in the Arizona Fall League or for a team in the Carribean??? I think you should have to either be asked to play for one of these teams or apply to play... what do you think?

I thought of that too, but didn't mention it in the post. I think it would be an interesting wrinkle.

Is there also a way where you can decide to hire an agent (costs money - amount depends on the agent's status) or be your own agent and negotiate your own contract?
