The Hats

Has anyone done any graphic work concerning the hat/logo/picture part of your player. I think it's a pretty cool feature to have, with the logo on your hat changing as you change teams, but it doesn't look too good right now.

I guess the specific graphics I'm wondering about are a hat template (that looks more like a hat) and/or a logo set (that looks better on the hats).

I've attempted these things myself, but without the $500 Fireworks program, I didn't get very far. BTW, any suggestions for free graphic editor/creators out there? I wouldn't have a ton of uses for it so I wouldn't want to spend much.

Thanks for anything.

And I just wan tot make one comment regarding the hat logo thing. i think it looks VERY awkward and they might as well take that feature off.
  • Or at least take off the border that surround the logo.
  • Or maybe have an option of letting us input .gif logos with transparent backgrounds.
  • Or have it so that the logo is layed out in a bar under the entire player photo so that it looks more like a label or caption.
Right now it just looks really weird and poorly done.

As long as the hat is black or near-black, any logo with a transparent border looks fine to me ... the problem would be with a logo set that was square, filling the entire pane.

Heck, I clipped my personal photo from a old-time portrait of me dressed in an Old West period suit, sepia with a dark brown cowboy hat. Looks kinda funny having a cowboy hat with a baseball logo on it, but it's still me.

I'm in the process of creating a set of player photos (just a light, medium, and dark skinned player) and a set of MLB logos that will match, that way there will be no box. I have been using the logos that are currently on the MLB players caps, so it should look semi-realistic. As far as the default logos that come with the game, maybe I'll tackle that later.

I'm hoping to have the player photos and logos finished up in the next day or so, and I'll have them up here to download the minute they are completed.

Here is a sample of what I came up with. I stole a mugshot of a player from HH2K4, and sized it up so the hat coordinates would match that of the default player photos. This is just one of them, I'm working on the medium and darker skinned guys right now. I would also like to make versions using the different cap colors.

I tried it out in the game and the logo matches up on it. Hopefully by later on today I will have the logos finished that will look they belong on the cap, rather than the box type logo.

If you want to use this plain old white guy right now, you can d/l it here in BMP form, but you'll have to rename it "player1" or 2,3,4,5. I'd recommend making a backup of the photo you are replacing in case you want to revert back to the old one later.

Okay, I completed the set of logos and player faces. There are three different players to choose from; light, medium, and dark skinned. The logos are made to match the caps on those players. I used the logos that are on the MLB caps, in a few cases I used an alternate logo color for better results. Even has the new Padres and Jays logos. Still black caps, just like the defaults, except they don't just look like black blocks for caps.

You can get them here:

Wow, I really screwed the pooch on that one....if you downloaded the file prior to about 9:30 pacific time, download it again. I put the unfinished logos in there by mistake, so half of them had transparency issues. The file has been updated, should be good to go now.

Thanks. The only thing I don't like about it is that the game resizes the logos for you, almost distorting them a little bit, but oh well, you gotta work with what you've been given. I tried to make them so that there was a semi-decent balance between them all size-wise.
