BZ 1785: High CPU usage

When OOTP is closed and nothing else open, the CPU usage is around 0% - 1%.

As soon as I open OOTP and sit there idle, the CPU usage stays around 50% - 58%, is this normal?

Is there any particular screen you are on when the CPU usage is high? Are you just talking about the main page?

As soon as it loads up.. doesn't matter which screen. If I just sit back and do nothing.. the CPU hovers around 50%.

I'm seeing 0-1% when my computer is idle, with OOTP open or not.

I'm seeing up to 50% when OOTP is actively doing something like opening up or simming.

Have you seen this on multiple occasions? Are you sure that nothing else was running in the background, like a virus scan?

Yes, this is with my anti-virus turned off and nothing else running, doesn't matter.

It will sit at 50% until I close ootp out. Once I close ootp, it stays on 0%-1%.

MizzouRah, if you click on the Processes tab and sort by CPU usage, can you tell if it's actually OOTP that is running at 50%?

Thanks!

Obviously, by now you've probably gathered that this isn't normal!

Yes, it's definitely OOTP that's running at 50%. OOTP is at 50% and System Idle process is at 50%.

How often is Outlook Express checking for new mail? Mine is set pretty frequently and I found closing it improved my processing slightly.

MizzouRah,, this is WEIRD.

Can you tell us about your system? What Operating System do you use? What kind of a chipset do you have?

I can close everything out, including taskbar options and it still runs my CPU at 50%.

I have a Dell Dimension E520

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13 Ghz
3 GB memory
Windows XP SP3

Battists, I'm going to see if there is some updated drivers for my chipset.

That may not be the actual usages. Sometimes this figure is out of whack on some computers, especially using Vista. I had the same problem when I had Vista on my computer. I finally switched back to XP and the usage was much improved.
You might want to try a program that will free up some of your memory. I am and have always used FreeRam XP Pro. I even used it with Vista and it worked. The program is free. Just google the name and it will find it for you.
Worth a try, anyway.

Trust me, I have XP and it's something going on with the game. Nothing else I play or use does this like ootp does.

I have 3 GB of memory.. so that's DEFINITELY NOT the issue.

Something with the game and my pc is screwy.. the trouble is finding out what the issue is.

MizzouRah, did you try uninstalling and then reinstalling? I was having a similar issue before the latest patch (CPU usage was staying at 100% when idle at times). It went away after I installed the patch. I thought it was fixed because of the patch. But I always do a clean install when a new version comes out. so maybe that's what fixed it for me. its worth a try. Delete all your ootp folders after you uninstall too (under my docs, program files).

Just don't delete your saved games along with it. Move them first!
