My Board-Based Logos

Last summer, I got this idea to make a league in which I would base cities on people from this board. I don't know why; it just seemed like a cool idea. Anyway, I went ahead and got a bunch of info on stuff like post counts for about 250 of the top posters on the board (which would become market size numbers) and made names of cities that were (sometimes vaguely) based on the screen names. I had in mind that I would do a write-up of each city and it would have characteristics that were somewhat similar to the person upon whose name it was based.

I got as far as making logos for many of these teams, but I have never actually gotten around to making the league, and I'm not sure I will. Anyway, I'm happy enough with the logos that, even if I don't get around to doing the potentially humorous dynasty thread, I'd like to at least share this stuff with people here.

Some of the nicknames are based on aspects of people's personalities or things about them like their occupations or hobbies or whatever. Most are lighthearted in some way. Obviously I don't know everyone so that wouldn't always be the case. But in this thread I'll upload, one by one, some of the logos I've made along with descriptions of the city based on that person. It will usually be obvious from name similarity who each one was based on, but I'll let people guess.

ADDED: I forgot to mention that the idea was that these would be cities in a set of fictitious countries located on a fictitious island in the Atlantic Ocean between Europe and the US. There would be eight countries on the island, each based on a section of the board.

Write-ups will be rather short and vague for two reasons: I never got around to putting more than basic thought into them and I don't have much time to do them.

ALSO ADDED: Most of the logos here contain artwork that I found online, mostly by looking through clipart sites. If anyone has a problem with my use of particular artwork, please contact me and I'll remove it.

I'll start out with the most obvious one...

City: Heinsohn

Heinsohn is the capital city of its country, the place where the central government is located, and where laws are passed. It is generally thought of as a prime cultural center - a place where trends are set, and where actions taken have a ripple effect that reaches the entire island.

Orange City is the science mecca of the island. With several large universities devoted to the study of physics, engineering, chemistry, and other such academic pursuits, it is seen as a place for bright minds.

Orange City is also the home of the Baseball Scheduling Center, where schedules for all leagues on the island are drawn up each season by a think tank organization.

Cooleyville is an old-fashioned, conservative city nestled in the central hills of the island. It is home to the Central Post Office, which services all nations of the island. Unlike the United States, the Central Post Office is not federally owned. It is a private company that has contracted with all the nations on the island.

City: Graflusia
Team: Graflusia Ungulates

Originally called the Rampaging Cows, the team changed its name after protests from the Ungulate Rights League pointed out that the team name painted a picture of cows as being violent creatures and that such speciesist views should not be supported by a sports team.

Graflusia is a strange place. Mayonnaise is considered an illegal substance due to old (but strongly enforced) laws on the books. Ungulates are considered to have full voting rights and can own property. Sheep are considered to have a higher voting status than humans, in fact. Every meal is required by law to be served with a helping of spam.

The city of Longenam was once known as "City That Is Located A Little North Of Most Other Cities," but it shortened its name for the sake of cutting down on the cost of ink.

Longenam is known for generating good left handed pitchers.

The team got its nickname from its socialist flare. In truth, the city is based upon the anarcho-syndicalist views of Noam Chomsky, whose writings form a core of central books that every school child must read.

Port Jestre's primary function is importing materials from various other places in the world and shipping them, unprocessed, to other parts of the island. It is unrivaled on the island in this regard. It is also known for its hard-nosed residents who never back away from a good fight.

City: Shuntsburg

Shuntsburg is the only city on the island where English is not the primary language. Rather, it is a related language known as o0xst-speak. The city is filled with many quirks and is considered by many to be lawless. It is generally a place that is either loved or hated.

The name "Fubes" comes from an o0xst-speak word whose meaning is something like "cool people," although Shuntsburg residents often cackle when they hear this definitiion given.

City: Daedia
Team: Daedia Saviors

The most Christian city on the island, Daedia's team was known as the Messiahs until a lawsuit forced them to change the name to something less specifically religious, a point of annoyance for many residents of the conservative, religious city. Indeed, the league has had many fights with Daedia over what it sees as Daedia's attempts to force its religion into the league - which Daedia's residents see as just a means of expressing themselves as any other group can. The team logo has been criticized as well for its extremely Jesus-like figure.

I can't believe I am not even a blip on your board teams! Good ideal though. I like it.

City: Joshotu
Team: Joshotu Spinners

Joshotu is the center of Jewish life on the island. Most of the city's population is comprised of Immigrant Israeli and American Jews. The city also features the Esteemed Sinai School of Law.

The team thought it could avoid controversy similar to the problems Daedia had by not referencing the population's religion directly in the team name. However, the inclusion of a dradel in the team logo was a point of contention for the league. Joshotu's lawyers argued that since Daedia was allowed to keep its Christ, it should be able to keep its dradel. A compromise was reached in which the Hebrew lettering was removed from the dradel, although a team of Joshotu lawyers (of which there are many) is currently fighting to get them back on.

What an original idea. Can always count on you for the unusual take on both league creations and league concepts. As I recall, I used to scour your posts for ideas when creating fictional leagues because you used to create about a dozen a week, never actually running a season or two with any of of them. It seems the fun is sometimes in the setup, not always in the execution.

Good work, ctorg.

City: Jaxton
Team: Jaxton Blacks

The team name caused some problems when it was first announced, because if there is one thing Jaxton is known for, it is being black. Many were concerned that this would be taken the wrong way. That is, it has a huge population of people of African descent. In truth, though, the name is just a play on "Blackjack".

Yeah, I had an idea that in my own private universe some religious issues might creep into the rivalry, but that's beyond the scope of making the teams like people here, since neither of the guys who the names are based on are like that.

Good work, ctorg.
Thanks, dude.

Yeah, I have a problem with my interest dropping off quickly once I start a league.

I never even finished making all the teams for this one.

It is said that when a person goes to Churchville, he feels like he has taken a step back to a time when people were more courteous and had manners. Indeed, despite its very large size, the city is known for its unusually courteous and polite, often self-deprecating residents. Always a pleasant trip for any visitor.
