Here's the very first attempt at a logo. colour scheme is curious and "Owls" should be at bottom of logo but things are approximately in the right place I think.

Looks pretty good to me! To get Owls at the bottom you wiil need to do a seperate text cicle, with a negative fill angle. But apart from that, I think its just a question of you fiddling until you get it looking exactly how you want.

Second attempt. Slightly better and managed to get lettering at the bottom of the logo.

Looking good! The only thing I'd say with this one is that the Alexandria text isn't quite symetrical - it doesn't curve down on the right quite as far as on the left. A good way to make sure that it matches is to make sure that the arc fill is double the start angle - so if you start at -60degrees, the arc fill would be 120 degrees. For bottom text, the fill would be double (180 minus the start angle), so for text starting at -130 degrees, the arc fill would be -100degrees.

Nothing slowly about it! That looks good! The only, only tiny thing left is that the text is touching the grey rings. And all that is, is a question of fiddling, moving and resizing until you get it perfect. Now, go get on with some requests

Here's a question guys:

How do I take a current picture, and then make it into a circular logo using GIMP?

I'm not really interested actually creating from scratch, but being able to transform pictures into circulars.

Do you have an example of what you are trying to accomplish?

I'm going to put in a plug for the other side: vector-based drawing programs as opposed to raster-based image editing programs.

Most folks doing logos just seem to naturally use raster-based programs like Photoshop or GIMP. That certainly works, but some may find it easier and/or more useful to switch to a vector-based drawing program like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW.

Personally, I use CorelDRAW.

Great job by all of you. I personally start with a double sized image because I find it easier to work with and then when I am done I just cut it down to fifty percent. I think it makes the logo more crisp looking by doing it that way. I use Paint Shop Pro, by the way. Gimp is a nice program but I am so used to using PSP X2 now that I just feel more comfortable with it.
Anyway, great job by all of you here, even the first timers at it. Fun, isn't it? I probably enjoy creating logos and uniforms as much as playing the game. Or maybe more!!

I'm not sure what you mean.

It's not too hard to create a circular frame for a pre-existing logo. You can use the paintbrush tool in GIMP (and I assume similar tools with other programs) to create a circular background. Then you can paste a logo into that circular background.

If you mean something more complex than that, I guess I'd need to know more about what you want to know before I could tell you what to do.

No, that really sounds about right, but are you saying that I should resize the image first, then copy and paste into the circle?

I agree that a logo turned out of a vector-based program generally looks nicer and more professional - not to say raster logos can't look good too. For people that want to try a vector-based program, you might want to download the free public domain program Inkscape and give it a whirl.
