Fictional Foreign Country Uniforms
I'm planning to have Asian, European, and Latin American leagues in my semi-fictional world. There'll be one team per country - 32 in Europe, 12 in Asia, and 20 in Latin America. To save time and avoid having to pick nicknames and logos and to avoid having to use foreign text in many different languages, I used the country's flag for the uniform and its coat of arms for the cap logo. They're not fancy but I think they turned out pretty good.
I thought I'd post a few of them here to see if anybody else wants to use them. If so, let me know. Tom |

These look really cool, especially the Slovakia one.
One suggestion though, continuing the jersey color over the shoulders a bit would improve them, imho. It looks a little weird stopping so abruptly. |

To make it quicker I just did the fronts (since there are 64 countries). The backs and sleeves are a very light gray. But it will be easy to copy the color on the top of the uniforms to the back. Thanks for the suggestion.

Very nice! Do you have any plans to add African countries?

Here are some updated images with the color on the back of the jerseys as well. Some will be harder to do as they have two colors on the shoulders. I think these definitely look better.
I'll probably do some African countries as well. I have a template now and most of these go fairly quickly...but some flags are harder to fit onto a jersey. But one of these days I'm going to have to actually start playing OOTP rather than designing logos, uniforms, etc.! |

Yeah, I was just thinking about teams like the Netherlands would be trickier. Maybe a left and a right shoulder?
One other question? Will you be splitting up the UK (into England/Scotland/Wales/Northern Ireland) or will it just be the one team? |

Yeah, there are a number of countries that have three vertical bars on their flags. Will be a bit trickier but not that bad, I suppose. Might take some trial and error.
I treated the UK as one country. Although Wales, etc are in the OOTP database so that would certainly be doable. I used the list from the Confederation of European Baseball Confederation of European Baseball - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia but eliminated some of the smallest countries (e.g. San Marino) and Israel (not in Europe) - which means I probably should do a Middle East league as well. |

Here are a couple more. Most are still colored only on the front. I'll fix those when I'm done.

The reason I asked is that I'm about to resurrect my old OOTP5 African league for OOTP9. I notice that you have a Turkish jersey. That would look quite nice in my Global League, since I have a team from Istanbul. North Korea also has a cool flag...my Global League has a team called the Pyongyang Red Giants. How difficult is it to make jerseys? I have tried to read a couple of how-to posts that our fellow OOTPers have kindly taken the time to write, but I get lost very quickly. All that talk about transparencies and layers etc. I am artistically challenged, unfortunately. I don't have Photoshop, just Paint, and some freeware graphics programs that come on PC Utilities magazine discs. I really admire those of you who are doing such beautiful work and sharing it with this community.

First off, I'd recommend downloading GIMP, a free image editor that supports layers, and Deft's jersey templates. Paint is a little too simplistic of a tool. As far as how complex jerseys are to make, they can be as simple or as complex as you want. If you want intricate striping, it obviously takes a lot longer than if you just want a one-color chest with a jersey logo. Correct me if I'm wrong, tombair, but it looks like you're just pasting the flags onto a jersey template, which is pretty straight-forward. In deft's template, there are 3 different things that you need to color: the collar, the main jersey, and the arms. Deft has split these into layers, and while there's a lot more in the template, for simple jerseys these are the only things you need. When you open Deft's template in GIMP, you'll see a layers window. Layers are basically like transparencies that you can stack on top of one another to build an image in pieces. If any layers both cover the same space on the jersey, the one that is listed higher will be the one on top. You can turn each layer on and off by clicking on the little "eye" icons listed next to each. To paste in a flag (or any image you want on the jersey), simply open it in GIMP, select what you want to copy and copy it. Then, go to your jersey and paste the image. It won't act as a layer right away, so you have to right click on it and select "New Layer". That will make it part of your design. Then, it's just a matter of using the scale tool to resize the image (Ctrl + dragging preserves the aspect ratio), and the move tool to move it to the right position. If you want to change the arm color/jersey color, you can use the fill tool. There are two boxes that make up the jersey and arm layers. One is the color, and one turns it into the right shape. If you select the left one, you can fill it with a given color. Making this tutorial and the jersey took me about 20 minutes, but I'm a little more used to the tools. Of course, I only started making jerseys 3 weeks ago, so you'll catch on fast. For making cap logos, all you need to do is either import a logo into the game, or rename it like this: Angola_206017038_000000000.png The first 9 digits are the RGB color values for the color of the main hat. (206 Red, 017 Green, 038 Blue, the red color of the Angolan flag), and the second 9 digits are the color of the bill (all 0 = black). If you load that image as a cap logo in the game, it will set the colors automatically for you. Hope this helps you get started! |

Thanks, cnield. That's a good tutorial. I use Paint.net (which is totally different than Paint) because I find it easier to use than GIMP. Either should be fine for doing basic uniforms. Paint.net is free as well. I only started making jerseys a few weeks ago as well.
And before I forget, thanks to Deft and Ambermonk for the templates. They make it easy to create good looking basic uniforms. I basically just paste in the flags but for some I've had to center the flag and do some filling around the edges or separately paste in elements from the flag (see the DROC below - the blue, red, and yellow one). Some flags just won't fit well into a basically square jersey area. But for most I just resized and pasted. The jerseys that have two or more colors at the top take a bit more work as well so the colors wrap around correctly but most jerseys (flags) only have one color at the top. I have several shading layers I use randomly (to put the wrinkles in the uniforms and to make them look more realistic) and I add a little bit of noise so that the colors are not so uniform. For the caps, I took the country coat of arms, resized it to 150x150, and picked one or two colors from the flag as cnield described. Unless you want a tricolor cap or something else nonstandard, that works well. Here are some of the African teams which I did this morning. I got the flags and coats of arms from Wikipedia - List of African countries by population - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . I've done the top 16 countries so I didn't do Angola. |

Geez Louise, that sounds so easy perhaps even I could do it!
Thank you very much for the information, cnield and tomblair.

When we were there, I had to clarify for my wife that the Ugandan flag does NOT have a chicken on it. Good stuff!

It doesn't?
I think it's a crane. This project is educational as well as fun! I think I've finished the jerseys and caps. I still have to redo the color codes for the team logos. Here are some of the latest. I did the Middle East but, frankly, most of them are boring (IMHO). Almost every flag is red, green, black and white. I also added a few more Asian countries. |
