Need Historical Accurate Names - First AND Last

OK, I'm stumped. I'd like to get a download of the most common U.S. surnames for certain decades so I can create a names file and get historically accurate names for my new league (which begins in 1947). The same goes for first names.

I've looked at Questdogs files, but I see two issues -- one, it only deals with first names, and two, it requires replacement of OOTP's nations.txt file with 228 nations with Questdogs' nations.txt file with only 31 nations.

The task is easy; finding the data isn't -- especially the last names. The U.S. Census website has databases for names from the 1990 census, but that's it.

How have the historical gamers not using actual players dealt with this? If it's 1947, guys like Hector Lopez and Yoshi Kazura shouldn't be on the roster, even if their nationality is American.

Anyone have an idea?

ALSO -- I'm a little confused as to what I need to do with name sets (or even how to modify them). Can someone assist, please?

Thanks!!

You can paste the wanted ethnic sets into a Questdog name set or vice versa....

Last names don't change so much with fashion; the common Anglo names now were common Anglo names a hundred years ago. (Excepting the ridiculous hyphenated craze of now. How selfish of these parents to put hyphens on their kids. What happens in 20 years when two hyphens want to get married and the woman wants her kids to have her name, too? Then we get 2 hyphens creating three....Smith-Wilson-Barret-Jones....20 years later we get 6 hyphens making 7!!!....dumb as dumb can be...)

The only way to keep unwanted ethnic names from your league is to edit the nations.txt file to remove the ethnic percentages from the United States.

Could someone tell me exactly where one can change the ethnicity percentages for a USA league. I followed the customization guide and opened the files in excel, but only saw lists of names. Where do I go to see the comma delimited line to change the percentages?

Here's some help . . .

Nations.txt

Existing line for the USA in nations.txt:

206,The United States,U.S.A.,USA,American,4,5,0,71,1,27,2,2

What do the nation values for namesets?

The second link takes you to the definitions of the ethncity values.

The current USA variables are set to:

4,5,0,71,1,27,2,2

4 is the continent. Ignore this, do not change this.
5 is the baseball quality. It is set to the highest value, do not change this.
0 is the 1st ethnicity. It is set to US. A better name description may be Modern US.
71 is the % of the population of the first ethnicty.
1 is the 2nd ethnicity. It is set to Hispanic.
27 is the % of the population set to Hispanic.
2 is the 3rd ethnicity. It is set to Japanese.
2 is the % of the population set to Japanese.

If you want a more historical US population, change the values to this:

206,The United States,U.S.A.,USA,American,4,5,39,71,0,29,,

With this, you are going to get an overwhelming number of century old names, and 1/3 of the names will be from modern census data. You will get just a tiny handful of Hispanic, Japanese, Chinese, etc. If desired, up ethnicity #1 to an even higher percentage.

If you want to use your own name set, locate the two name files, select all names from nameset #39, delete, then replace with your data. Then edit the nations.txt line for the USA to use nameset #39 similar to my example.
